Joan Madeline Klein, age 91, of Solon, New York, passed away on March 9, 2026, at Cortland Guthrie Hospital in Cortland, New York. She was the spouse of the late William H. Klein, with whom she shared 64 years of marriage and a home they built together in Chester County, PA. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late John Fillipp and the late Emma (Behm) Dowd.
Joan was a talented singer and musician and played the organ for many churches in southern Chester County, PA. For many years she taught piano lessons at her home and was proud of the accomplishments of her many students. She also worked as a secretary for the Chester County Mothers Against Drunk Driving assisting victims and their families, as a cafeteria aide for the Chadds Ford Elementary School, and as a data entry clerk for Sindlinger in Philadelphia. Prior to her marriage she worked for the Penn Mutual Insurance Company in Philadelphia.
Joan spent the last few years living with her oldest son, Karl, and daughter-in-law, Beth, where she enjoyed meeting many new friends, watching birds, seeing lovely sunrises and sunsets, enjoying good food, and laughing at the antics of household dogs Calvin, Ellie May, and Jethro, the latter of which would sing along as she played the piano. She also enjoyed visiting with and hearing about her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She won’t miss the squirrels who stole seeds from the birds at her house in PA.
Joan will be remembered by her three sons, Karl (Beth) of Solon, NY; Ken (Doris) of Oxford, PA; and Kurt (Lisa) of Midland MI; twelve grandchildren, Sean (Tamara), Jessica (Luke), Robin (Kimberly), Kaylin (Nick), Hannah (Kacy), Sarah, Rachel (Matthew), Samantha (Jacob), Veronica, Daniel, Joseph, and Rebecca; seven great-grandchildren, Owen, Beckett, Lily, Iris, Ivy, Maesie, and Edison; her sister, Carole Leidy; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, William Dowd and Larry Dowd; and special cousin, Tommy Robinson.
You are invited to a graveside service at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Glenwood Memorial Gardens, 2321 Westchester Pike, Broomall, PA 19008. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
