Joan M. Leinonen

Joan M. (Niemi) Leinonen, 88, a resident of the Bluffs Senior Living Community in Houghton, and a former resident of Chassell and South Range, passed away Wednesday morning January 22, 2025, at her home at The Bluffs.
Born on December 11, 1936, the daughter of the late William and Olga (Karna) Niemi. Joan was a high school graduate of the Doelle Agricultural School.
Joan was united in marriage to George E. Leinonen of Otter Lake and throughout their married life they resided in the Detroit area, Ontonagon, Atlantic Mine and South Range. George preceded her in death in 2011.
Joan was also preceded in death by her parents, brother Harry Niemi, and sister Beverly Hietala.
Joan is survived by her children: Glenn (Sue Berryman), Ann (Mark) Roth, Sue (Brian) Hietala, all of Chassell, and Becky (Marc) Blom of Marquette; grandchildren: Nikki (Cody) Smith, Jessica (Matt) Payment, Lauren (Griffen) Hodges, Kaitlyn (Ross) Michaels, Matthew Hietala, Ashlee Blom, and step-granddaughter Bonnie (TJ) Roth-Clisch; 9 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
At Joan's request there will be no funeral or memorial service and cremation has occurred. A private, family burial will be at a later date at the Elo Cemetery in Elo, Michigan.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorial donations to the Copper Country Humane Society, the Doelle Senior Citizens in Tapiola, or a charity of their choice.
Joan's family would like to thank the staff at both The Bluffs and 906 Home Services for the friendly, compassionate, and loving care you gave Joan. You were her extended family.
