LOWVILLE- Joan Marie King Coe Sampson

Joan Sampson, 93, formerly of Elm Street, died Tuesday evening, December 16, 2025 with her daughter Donna and her granddaughter Ellen at her side. She was a resident at Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, since August.

Joan was born in Syracuse, on January 21, 1932, the daughter of the late Howard and Genevieve (Johnson) King. Joan and her family moved to Lycoming. She met and married James R. Coe in 1951 where she then moved to a dairy farm in Scriba, and she raised her family. During those years she worked hard on the farm and she worked ten years in the food service department at the Oswego SUNY College and then worked at St. Luke's Heath Center as a nurse aide.

After her husband James passed away, she married Frank Sampson and lived in Pulaski. She divorced Frank Sampson and moved to Lowville, to be near her daughter Donna Santamour. Joan had eight children, 17 grandchildren and many great grandchildren and a few great-great grandchildren.

She loved crossword puzzles, reading, old movies, camping, traveling and gardening. As a teenager she loved horses and loved horseback riding. So on her 90th birthday we took Joan for a sleigh ride and it was one of the highlights of her life.

Joan attended New Day Community Church in Lowville and loved Jesus with all her heart. Her faith even led her on a mission trip to Spain. Joan's mission in life was to pray for each and every one of us, every night at bedtime, and she did that very well. Joan was happy to be independent in her apartment for 28 years.

Joan is survived by her daughters, Debbie Alton of Fulton, Judy (Eli) Rapaport of Florida, Ginny Coe of Arizona and Donna (Jack) Santamour of Lowville, by her son, Lynn Coe of West Virginia, and by her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Joan is predeceased by her spouse James R. Coe, her second husband, Frank Sampson, her three sons, Max, Dugan, and James H. Coe, and all of her siblings.

She will be buried at the North Scriba Union Cemetery with a graveside service with family and close friends to be held on a hot, sunny day in late spring.

Memorials in Joan's name may be Made to: Friends of Lewis County Hospice, P.O. Box 266, Lowville, NY 13367
