Joan Schouest Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 1, 2025.
Joan Demers Schouest, 84, passed away peacefully on Sept. 23, 2025.

Born to the late Ernest Paul and Dorothy (Taft) Demers, Joan graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1959. She pursued higher education at Louisiana State University, earning an undergraduate degree in History and a Master's in Education. A devoted fan, Joan loved cheering for her LSU Tigers throughout her life.

Education was a cornerstone of Joan's life. She dedicated many years to teaching elementary school and later served as a principal, earning the East Baton Rouge Parish Elementary School Principal of the Year award for the 1997-1998 school year at Tanglewood.

An enthusiastic athlete, Joan was an avid tennis player and golfer. She took pride in teaching her two sons to play golf, fostering a shared passion for the sport. Her active lifestyle also included playing bridge, practicing yoga, and traveling, with a particular fondness for Florida's beaches.

Joan is survived by her devoted sons, Paul (Lori Lewis) of Blue Ridge, Georgia, and Aaron (Lise Tousignant) of Atlanta, Georgia, her five grandchildren, Charlie, Bryant (Kelsie), Suzanne, Oliver, and Lydia, and two great-grandchildren, Scarlett and a baby expected in April 2026. She is also survived by her sisters, Sue (Bill) Shea and Lynne Becker, as well as several nieces, nephews, other family members, and cherished friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Alford, her parents, her sister, Karen, and her first husband, Michael Schouest.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Elaine Young, Joan's dear friend for many decades, for her unwavering care and compassion.

We were so blessed to be Joan´s next door neighbors for the last 2 years. She was a wonderful woman and friend. Loved having long chats with her as she was a kind and intelligent lady who loved life and her family. Rest easy sweet lady after a life well lived. We will miss her for sure! Prayers of comfort to her family! Love, Pam & Larry Kressler

Although I only met Joan once in person, she became a devoted yoga student of mine (on Zoom) for several years. Joan will be missed by all of us! RIP dear one ~ with love and fondness, Lees Yunits
