Joan Darlene Simmons, 73, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 28th, 2026. Born on April 22nd, 1952, in Athens, Ohio, Joan lived a life full of love, sarcasm, and dedication to her family.
A graduate of Marietta High School, class of 1970, Joan went on to work for the Ohio Department of Transportation, where she dedicated many years of service before retiring in 2011.
Joan enjoyed playing BINGO, bowling, and taking trips to the casino with her twin sister. However, her greatest joy came from spending time with her cherished grandchildren, who were the light of her life.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Holly Scharff (Brian) and her stepdaughter, Kelly Kidd. Joan was a proud grandmother to Allison, Emily, and Cole Damron, Caleb Scharff (Alyssa Hutchinson) and Madelyn Scharff, Ashley Chambers (Branden), Laine Combs (Joey), Malkom Kidd (Kristin), Kacey Simpson, Chase Simmons and Brandon Thomas (Rebecca); many great-grandchildren; and her brother, CJ Verity (Angie).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Curtis Calendine and Illa May Blackford Verity; her beloved spouse, Larry Lane "Buzzy" Simmons; her stepdaughters, Kim Hart and Karrie Simmons; her grandson, Matthew Kidd; her brother, Gary Calendine; and twin sister, Joanna Edgell.
The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time, especially Dr. Kelli Cawley and her caring team at Cawley Hospice.
