Joan Mitchell Spikes

Joan Mitchell Spikes passed away Monday, June 30, 2025. Joan was seventy.
A memorial service will be held in the Farmer Funeral Chapel on Thursday at 11 AM. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 PM to 8 PM at Farmer Funeral Home.
Joan was a lifelong resident of the Grifton community. She graduated from Lenoir Community College with a nursing degree. She worked for many years as a nurse in the dialysis unit at Lenoir Memorial Hospital and later at Vidant Medical Center. Joan was a loving and devoted caretaker to numerous family members and friends over the years. She was always willing to be there for others in need. Many would say she was always the life of the party. She enjoyed a good cup of coffee and visiting with family and friends. She especially liked Thursday meals at Bum's restaurant with family members. Spending time with her family and friends was her greatest joy.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Donnie Spikes; daughter, Carla Michelle Jones; parents, Leroy and Mary Alice Mitchell; and sister-in-law, Alice Alcox Mitchell.
She is survived by her son, Michael Griffin; grandchildren, Meghan Griffin and Seth Michael Griffin; and their mother, Christine Griffin; step-daughter, Donna Spikes Duncan (Mike); step-grandchildren, Caleb and Connor Duncan; brothers, Ronald Mitchell, Charles Mitchell (Sandy), Stanley Mitchell, and Glenn Mitchell (Tina); nephews, Alan Mitchell (Robin), and Charles "Scooter" Mitchell, Jr. (Jessica).
