Joan Toohey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Slattery Funeral Home - Marlborough on Jan. 23, 2025.
Joan Marie Toohey, 81, of Marlborough, MA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 15, 2025, at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, MA, following a short illness.
The eldest of four children, Joan was born on November 08, 1943, in Waynesboro, PA, to the late Joseph A. and Therese F. (Krajsa) Mihalcik. She grew up in Allentown, PA, where she graduated from Central Catholic High School before earning her bachelor's degree in Music Education at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA. It was graduate school that brought Joan to Massachusetts, where she earned her master's degree in Music at Boston University.
Joan was hired into the Marlborough Public School System as a junior high music teacher where she met her loving husband of over fifty-three years, James (Jim) F Toohey, who was an Assistant Principal at the school. Soon after marriage, Joan and Jim went on to have family. Joan paused her teaching career and spent over ten years as a homemaker and full-time mother to their three children, Danny, Ann, and Joey.
During this time, Joan still maintained her passion for music and teaching others. She started a part-time piano lesson business, she sang soprano in the Immaculate Conception Church Choir, and she founded and directed the Marlborough Jr. Women's Club Chorus as well as an accompanying holiday children's chorus. Additionally, Joan became actively involved with the Marlborough Cultural Affairs office, performing and serving as the musical director for numerous community theater performances in the 70s and 80s. She also founded and directed the Marlborough Community Chorus for several years.
In the mid-80s, Joan returned to work in the Marlborough school system. She taught for a few years at the Kane Elementary School and then moved to the Marlborough High School where she founded the Marlborough High School Show Choir and reestablished the annual spring musical. Joan was eventually named the Music Coordinator of Marlborough Public Schools and held that position until her retirement in 2004.
Joan enjoyed her retirement years with Jim, spending their winters in Florida and summers in York Beach, ME and Wildwood, NJ. She liked reading, cross-stitching, doing the daily crossword, attending musical theater, playing bridge, and sunbathing by the pool or on the beach. Joan valued family and friendships dearly. She never missed the annual Christmas and summer family reunions, and she always tried to keep in touch with old friends. Joan also believed in the importance of keeping tradition, and she took pride in cooking the Slovak recipes passed down from her parents.
Joan is survived by her devoted husband, Jim; her children Daniel (Melissa) Toohey, Ann (Jeff) Sisson, and Joseph; her six grandchildren; her three siblings; and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Services for Joan will be private. Slattery Funeral Home, Inc., 40 Pleasant Street, MA 01752 is handling arrangements.

Joan was music coordinator when I was on the school committee and I remember her enthusiasm for the musicals that the students performed as well as her support for the music programs in the schools. I am sorry other of her passing.

Mrs. Toohey was my music teacher from 1993-1998. She required excellence from her students, and was the most impactful teacher I had. She definitely deserves credit for getting me, and dozens of other students during my high school days, into Central District and All-State Chorus. May her memory be a blessing to all that knew and loved her. She will be missed

Both Jim and Joan were at Marlboro Junior High School when it was located in what is now the Walker Building. I loved her and loved singing in the chorus. I also remember their house on Crescent Street when I lived on Mt. Pleasant. Really good people. I remember one time the chorus was preparing for a concert and we were rehearsing "Up With People" and Jim and a couple other teachers walked across the back of the auditorium with a banner that read "up with people, down with stairs." It got us all laughing and that memory makes me smile to this day. My prayers for you.

My deepest condolences to the Toohey family and all who knew and loved her! Mrs. Toohey certainly helped to shape my love of music which I believe carried on in my children (my son just graduated from college with his degree in music composition). Her legacy carries on deeper than she probably knew!

I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Toohey's passing. I was a proud MHS chorus and band member in the early-mid 90s and I'm so thankful for everything Mrs. Toohey did for MHS music. My deepest condolences to the Toohey family.

To Mr Toohey, Dan, Ann and Joe. My deepest condolences to all of you. Your mom was always fun. I have great memories of her, from show choir to musicals to band. Let´s never forget our trip to NYC, I know my mom always remembers the times with your mom on that trip. Keep all your memories with you of her. She will always be around with the little signs that will pop up.

My deepest condolences to Jim and family. Thank you for sharing her with the music students of Marlborough. I remember sitting in your kitchen after my piano lessons, waiting for my mom to pick me up. I had four wonderful years with her as my choral director at MHS- she encouraged me in so many ways. Thank you, Joan - I promise not to drown out the other Altos. <3

Sending love and hugs to Jim and to Joan's beautiful family. We will miss our special winter journey with her and Jim; new restaurants, lots of laughs and of course the Red Sox. She would light up talking about her musical journey in Marlborough. We bet she got them singing in heaven with just a few criticisms to help them improve.
