Joan Ann Weigandt, of the Mill Fall Community, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025, with her daughter by her side.
Joan was born on April 9, 1928, in
Jersey City, New Jersey, to Joseph and Gertrude Linehan. She attended St. Aloysius Catholic School for all 12 years of her education, and it was there that she met the love of her life, Frank Weigandt. Frank was drafted during World War II while still a senior in high school and was sent to Japan. Joan and her classmates arranged for all the boys serving in the military to receive their diplomas in absentia. While overseas, Frank wanted to formalize his relationship with Joan and mailed her an engagement ring. The family often joked that she was really engaged to the mailman. Joan and Frank married on October 2, 1948.
The couple both worked at Dixon Pencil Co. in Jersey City, home of the famous Ticonderoga pencil, until Frank accepted a position with the Department of Defense as a Quality Control Representative. They moved to Hazlet, New Jersey, where they raised their four children. Joan was a devoted homemaker until all the children were in school, after which she worked at Alexander's shoe store and later as a clerk at a local Oldsmobile dealership. She served as president of the Cove Road School PTA, was a Camp Fire Girls leader, and was an officer of the Holy Family Church Altar and Rosary Society. After Frank's retirement, the two worked seasonally at Six Flags Great Adventure until his sudden passing in 1986.
Following Frank's death, Joan moved to Mill Fall in West Virginia to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and David Loss. She quickly became part of the community-Jersey accent and all. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the perfect babysitter for her granddaughter, Ronnie. Joan never remarried, saying she had been blessed with 38 wonderful years with her husband.
Though always a Jersey Girl at heart, Joan cherished her 35 years in West Virginia, saying it reminded her of the Poconos, where she and Frank had hoped to retire. She never met a stranger and had a special love for children. She enjoyed assisting with events at her granddaughter Ronnie's schools.
Joan was well-known for her love of everything Disney, but especially Mickey Mouse, with whom she shared a birth year, although she envied Mickey's ability to never apparently age. Fortunately, Frank shared her love of Disney, enough so that the family of six traveled by car to go to Walt Disney World the year it opened. They all shared one hotel room in Orlando and TWO ticket books! We younger kids were left with the "A" tickets, and Frank complained about the price of the food, but it was still magical. Joan and Frank even went to WDW after he retired-without the kids! Later, Joan would go there with her grandchildren, and even by herself. She last went for her 90th birthday, with her daughter, walking all the parks and refusing a wheelchair.
Joan had many gifts, including a beautiful soprano voice. She and Frank, a tenor, were the backbone of their church choir. Joan also sang for weddings and funerals, drawing on her many years of Latin from school. She was a talented seamstress who lovingly sewed her daughters' and granddaughters' special-occasion dresses and costumes, often by hand.
Joan is survived by her three daughters: Frances Weigandt of Lakewood, New Jersey; Christine Weigandt of Brooklyn, New York; and Mary (David) Loss of Mill Fall. She leaves behind four grandchildren-Stacey Weigandt, Jason (Alisa) Weigandt, Veronica "Ronnie" (Corey) White, and Genevieve "Genny" Yosco-and three great-grandchildren: Lily and Lane Weigandt, and Daniel Conti. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Irene Linehan, and daughter-in-law Maryann Weigandt. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Frank, her brother Joseph Linehan, and her son, Brian Weigandt.
Joan chose cremation and wished to be reunited with Frank in Whiting Memorial Garden in Whiting, New Jersey. The family will celebrate her life at a later date in New Jersey. In lieu of flowers or donations, and in the spirit of the season, Joan would want those who knew her-or those simply reading this-to be kind to one another.
Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home is honored to be assisting the family with these wishes.
