Joanne Hale Obituary

Joanne M. (VanDyke) Hale, affectionately known to many as Aunt Jo, passed away on September 18, 2025, in North Syracuse, NY. Born on March 12, 1936, in Syracuse, NY, Joanne was a lifelong resident who dedicated herself to both her family and community.
Joanne's professional journey began after completing her education at St. Lucy's School, where she graduated in 1954, followed by earning her Associates in Business from Maria Regina College in 1970. She worked as a clerical worker for Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance from 1964 to 1969, and later, she brought her creativity to Sweetheart Market, where she specialized in cake decorating from 1999 to 2003. Additionally, Joanne established her own daycare, Aunt Jo's Child Care, which she operated from 1969 until 2001.
A caretaker at heart, Joanne was known for her kindness and compassion toward all who knew her. She was a lifetime member of the Women of the Moose, dedicating time to work bingo and play a pivotal role in organizing the Fourth of July picnic at the VA Hospital, reflecting her commitment to giving back to others.
Joanne took immense pride in her family, often citing them as her greatest accomplishment. She leaves behind her two sons, Edward (Kathleen) VanDyke and Charles (Paula) VanDyke; her daughter, Laurianna VanDyke; along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her best friend and father of her children, Charles H. VanDyke Sr.; son, William VanDyke; parents, James M. and Eleanor (Green) McCabe; brothers, James E. McCabe and Terrance M. McCabe; and her sister, Nancy McCabe Smith.
Calling hours will be held on September 25, 2025, from 4PM - 7PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, North Syracuse. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Moose Charities for Moose Heart Youth Programs. Joanne's warmth, spirit, and unwavering devotion to her family and community will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
