Joao Luis Obituary
Waterbury
Mr. Joao E. Luis, 92, of Waterbury, entered into the gates of Heaven on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at Beacon Brook Health Center in Naugatuck. He was the beloved husband of Olimpia D. (Silva) Luis.
Joao was born in Bragado, Portugal on April 25, 1933, son of the late Manuel and Palmira Luis. He proudly served in the Portuguese Army. He settled to Waterbury from Portugal in 1969. He was a skilled self-employed carpenter as well as working many years at Busha Lumber until his retirement in 1998.
He enjoyed long walks in the park, making homemade wine and aguardente with his sons, gardening, and fishing. He was a long-time communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church and donated his time and skills at the church. He was a member and volunteer of the Portuguese Sportsman Club in Waterbury. Most importantly he loved spending time with his family who meant everything to him, especially his grandchildren.
Besides his wife Olimpia of 69 years, Joao leaves to honor and cherish his memory: eight children, Manuel Luis (Sandra) of Prospect, Jose Luis (Elsa) of Waterbury, Maria Olimpia Pereira (Antonio) of Middlebury, Maria Judite Cunha (Manuel) of Waterbury, Evangelista Joao Luis (Elisa) and Antonio Luis (Nelia) all of Naugatuck, Rosa Dos Santos (Luis) of Wolcott and Mario Luis (Lisa) of Waterbury; a brother, Acasio Luis of Portugal; a sister, Maria Soares of Rio de Janeiro; fourteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Armando Luis and Celeste Silva.
Joao's family would like to sincerely thank the staff of Beacon Brook for the exceptional care and compassion given to him during his stay.
Arrangements: Funeral will be held Saturday at 9:00 a.m. from Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury to Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin Street, Waterbury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury. Calling hours will be held Friday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
