Joe Herbert Cain

Joe Herbert Cain, a man of deep faith and boundless love, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 86. Born on December 23, 1939, in Guthrie, Oklahoma, Joe's life was a testament to his unwavering Christian beliefs and his commitment to serving others.

Joe served as an inspiration to everyone around him, truly living by the Christian values that were important to him. At a young age, he was ordained as a minister, dedicating his life to the spiritual guidance and support of those around him. His calling led him to become a Chaplain for the Department of Corrections, where he served with compassion and grace. Joe's dedication to his ministry was evident in his work with Open Door Prison Ministries, which he founded in both Oklahoma and Florida. He gives credit for his passion for prison ministries to his mentors, Mr. Woodrow Bates and Mr. W. W. Hayes. His tireless efforts were recognized when he was named Prison Ministry Volunteer of the Year for Oklahoma.

In addition to his ministry, Joe was a man of many talents and interests. He held the distinction of being the youngest Newspaper Publisher in Oklahoma, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit and his commitment to community. His love for the outdoors was evident in the joy he found tending to his chickens, riding his tractor, and feeding the birds and squirrels in his yard. His all time favorite pastime was riding his great granddaughter, Emma, around on his golf cart. These simple pleasures were a reflection of Joe's appreciation for God's creation and his desire to nurture life in all its forms.

Above all, Joe cherished his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Cain, his loving children, Marvin Gibson and Patti Gibson, his cherished granddaughter, Whitney Gibson, and his great-granddaughter, Emma Goff. Joe's legacy of love and faith will continue to live on through them. He was predeceased by his parents, Ruby Mae Standard and Foster F. Cain, and his siblings, Evelyn M. Cochran and Foster F. Cain Jr., who have now welcomed him into eternal rest.

Joe's life was a journey of faith, love, and service. As the oldest Chaplain in Florida upon his retirement, he left behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him. His memory will be held in the hearts of his family, friends, and all the lives he touched with his kindness and wisdom.

As we bid farewell to Joe Herbert Cain, we celebrate a life well-lived, a race well-run, and a faith well-kept. His spirit will forever be a guiding light, and his memory a blessing to all.

A service celebrating his life will be held at McAlpin Funeral Home on Saturday, February 28, 2026, beginning at 11:00 AM Central Time. There will be a time of visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Dykes Cemetery in Sneads, FL.
