Joe Calvillo Jr. Obituary

Joe Calvillo Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend, peacefully passed away on December 19, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas, at the age of 73. Born on February 21, 1952, in Charlotte, Texas to Jose "Papa Joe" & Erlinda “Mama Lillie” Calvillo, Joe dedicated his life to his family, community, and the pursuit of his passions.

Graduating from Tahoka High School in 1971, Joe later attended Texas Tech University, setting the stage for a life rich in both ambition and accomplishment. In 1992, he embarked on a journey that would define his legacy when he bought his first farm. Joe went on to become the esteemed owner of several local businesses, including Calvillo Farms, Calvillo Bail Bonds, and Papa Joe's Beer, Liquor & Wine. His commitment to the community extended beyond business; he served as the President of L.U.L.A.C, a member of the Tahoka Independent School District Board, and as a City Council member for Tahoka, always working toward the betterment of his hometown.

Joe married his wife of 35 years, Clara Saldana on July 21, 1991, in Las Vegas. Together they would embark on a journey only few could dream of. Joe's heart was a vast landscape of love and camaraderie. He cherished the time spent with his family, particularly with his three sons, Michael and Jennifer Calvillo, Justin Antu, both of Lubbock, and Jeremy and Rochel Antu of Tahoka; his daughter, Jessica Antu and Chris Samuel of Austin; as well as his two sisters, Helen and Paul Saldana of Tahoka, and Florinda and Eddie Rodriguez of San Antonio. With seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Joe's legacy will continue to thrive through those who loved him deeply. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews who often enjoyed spending quality time with their loving "Uncle Joe".

With a spirit as vibrant as the Texas skies, Joe found joy in many pursuits. He loved farming, frequently taking trips to Las Vegas, where the thrill of the lights mirrored his zest for life. He enjoyed grilling, sharing stories and laughter with family and friends around the grill drinking his Coors Lite. He had an extensive collection of Western Boots and enjoyed watching Texas Tech Football and cheering for the Dallas Cowboys. More than many, Joe enjoyed taking in the fresh air as he spent time driving to his farms to check on them.

Joe is lovingly remembered not only by his family but by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His absence will be profoundly felt, especially by those who have been touched by his kindness, humor, and unwavering spirit. He is preceded in death by three brothers, Manuel Alvarado, Isidro Alvarado Jr., and Juan Alvarado Sr., along with two sisters, Estella Lechuga and Eulalia "Eva" Calvillo.

Services for Mr. Calvillo will be 10:00 am Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at St. Jude Catholic Church with Father John Rathinam officiating. Burial will follow in Nevels Cemetery under the direction of Broadway Funeral Directors. A rosary will be held at 6:00 pm Monday, December 22, 2025, at Calvillo Funeral Chapel in Tahoka with visitation starting at 2:00 pm.
