Joe Kendrick Fortney (Kenny), 86, of Oldham Co., KY., went to be with Jesus on Friday, March 1, 2024, with his family surrounding him after a short but valiant battle with brain cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. and Louise Mefford Fortney; brothers, Ray and William; sister, Anna Doris; and eldest granddaughter, Brittney Jeffiers.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Peggy White Fortney, his daughter, Elizabeth "Beth" Minyard Anderson (Doug Jolly); two sons, Ronald E. Minyard, Jr. "Buddy" and Brian K. Fortney (Michelle White).
He is also survived by five grandchildren: Elizabeth Jeffiers-Ball "Betsy," Lori Grottenthaler (Thomas Brown), Bridgett Trent, Roscoe "Bradley" Anderson (Haley), and Chelsea Anderson "Bekah". The grandchildren gifted "Pop" 8 great-grandchildren.
Kenny graduated from Hughes-Kirk High School in Mullenberg County, Ky. He then joined the U.S. Air Force where he was trained in Oklahoma City to become an Air Traffic Controller then stationed in RAF Lakenheath, England. He then returned to the U.S. and held Air Traffic Controller positions at the Air Traffic Control Center in New York, Standiford Field and finally retiring from Bowmen Field in Louisville, KY. Kenny was also a Commercially rated Pilot.
He enjoyed traveling with his wife revisiting England; five jaunts to Hawaii, one of which was a mission trip. He was a member of Heaven's Angels motorcycle group at Southeast Christian Church. He toured with friends on his motorcycle from Kentucky to California on a month-long adventure. He was a designer and manufacturer of many creations to make his life easier. He enjoyed bowling on a church league, volunteering at the church, spending time with family and listening to Mickey Gilley.
Visitation: March 7, 2024, at Southeast Christian's "The Chapel in the Woods" (1407 Moser Rd., 40299) starting at 12:30pm until service time at 2pm.
The burial will be private later at Resthaven Cemetery.
