Joe George Obituary

Published by Weed Corley Fish Funeral Homes and Cremation Services - North on Apr. 15, 2018.
William Joseph George died peacefully at home surrounded by loving family one year after the death of his wife of 47 years, Mary Margaret George. Joe was born in Houston on March 1, 1946. He was raised by his parents and his brothers, who were 10 and 13 years older than him. He loved to recount the story of his arrival - nine months after the victory over Japan. "My parents were in their forties and we won the war," he would say, "what could possibly go wrong? Well... up jumped the devil!" Joe graduated from Lamar High School and the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a Sigma Chi, majored in Economics and - most importantly - courted Mary Margaret. He recalled meeting her as love at first sight and as he put it, "that was it for me." Joe began his career as a banker with City National Bank. He later joined Consolidated Insurance Agency and then Insurica. Many of the relationships with his clients and colleagues endured over more than 40 years. Joe loved his work, and he continued working until the month before his death. With his wife, Joe raised two daughters of whom he was immensely proud. He taught them through hard work, integrity, and humor. "This is your world," he would say, "I'm just living in it." Joe had many friends he cared for deeply. He was president of the Rotary Club and the Independent Insurance Agents of Austin and a founder of the Austin Rodeo. He served on the Board of the Sigma Chi House Corporation, Planned Parenthood of Austin, and the Austin chapter of the Boy Scouts. He was a longtime member of the Young Men's Business League, the Admiral's Club, and Westwood Country Club and a devoted member of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Joe is survived by his daughters, Dr. Margaret George Miller, a physician at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, and Tabatha George Marts, an attorney with Fisher Phillips in New Orleans; Maggie's husband Darris Miller and their children Mary and Clifford; and Tabby's husband Charlie Marts and their children Hattie and Jack. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Margaret, his brothers Tommy and RL George, Jr and his parents, Ringling Leo George and Anna Louise George. Joe's daughters would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to his incredible care team, including Raquel Orellana and the nurses and staff from Hospice Austin and RN Case Management who took loving care of Joe and laughed at his jokes, which wasn't hard to do. The service will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd on Thursday, April 19 at 4:00 pm, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joe's name to Hospice Austin, Helping Hand Home, or The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.

What a shock and loss. In all the many, many times Joe came into Tarrytown Texaco I cannot remember him not having that big smile (even when he was there with automotive troubles). A genuinely good man. He will be missed. Neal W. Newberry, Austin.

To Maggie and Tabby,
I was your Dad's roommate at the Sigma Chi house when I introduced him to your Mom. He was hooked the minute they met and I know they had a wonderful life together. They were such dear friends who will be missed forever. Please know that you and your families are in our prayers.

Maggie and Tabby, we are so saddened to hear of your Dad's passing. Your parents welcomed us to Austin as El Paso family when we moved there in 1976, and your dad even gave Bob his first job at City National Bank, which led to his banking career in El Paso. We have many fond memories of both your parents and will miss them dearly. Our deepest condolences to you and your families.

There really are no words to describe this great man except to say that he was loved by everyone who knew him. He has been my dear friend for as long as I can remember. He always had a smile, and he loved to laugh. He and Mary Margaret were a team in everything they did, and their love for each other was reflected in the beautiful family they created. Maggie and Tabby, he was so very proud of you both. It takes very special parents to rear such talented and lovely daughters. Please know how much he will be missed along with Mary Margaret. There is a huge hole in my heart. I am heartbroken.

What a great photo of Joe and a lovely tribute to him - written not only to highlight his accomplishments, but his wonderful love of family and his ability to recount a great story. I will miss him as I miss your Mother. They were dear friends. My heart is with you in this time of loss. Mary

"Maggie and Tabby, not only was your dad a great person to work with but a great friend. He truly will be missed. The only way we are getting through this, is knowing that he is back with the love of his life, your mom. What a wonderful love story they had. May God Bless you in this time of sorrow"

My thoughts and prayers go out to Maggie and Tabby and their families. Joe will be missed by so many of us that loved him as a co-worker and especially as a friend. His friendship meant the world to me and I will miss the many one-liners he used for just about any situation. Godspeed, my friend.

I had the opportunity to meet Joe while working with him at Guaranty Insurance. He was such a kind soul and I would enjoy listening to his life stories and knowledge of Austin in it's earlier years. Peace be with his family knowing he had such a fulfilled life with immense love surrounding him.

I was privileged to know Joe as a friend and customer for many, many years. He delighted in Mary Margaret and their daughters, and was justifiably proud of all. With sympathy to the family, and great joy in having known an exceptional individual.
