Joe David McAfee Hendrix was born June 2, 1938, in Springfield, Tennessee, to Enus Hobart and Mary Dell Barnes Hendrix. He graduated high school from Sulphur Springs, Texas, and was an athlete in both basketball and football. Joe held fond memories of the late 50’s when he and his quartet were invited to sing at the Grand Ole Opry. Roy Acuff was their MC and sponsor and hosted them at his ranch outside of Nashville.

Joe Graduated from Southwest Texas University in 1963 with a business degree. He then entered officers training school at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas and received a commission in the United Sates Air Force. He advanced to the rank of Captain and was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. After leaving the Air Force, he moved to Austin, Texas, where he owned and operated a full-service Texaco station.

Joe and his family moved to Russellville, Arkansas in 1976 where he became principal broker and co-owner of Harvest Realty. He was a member of the board of directors of Bay Ridge Boat and Golf Club. In the mid 80’s he served as co-chairman of River Valley Ducks Unlimited. In 1985 he was president of Russellville Kawanis Club. He and selected volunteers relocated the log cabin home of Piney Page, from Treat Arkansas to its present location at Potts Inn. Joe had a kind heart and loved to help others. He assembled six wishing well coin collectors that are seen at local restaurants raising money for Children’s Hospital and other worthy causes. In addition to his other volunteer work, he purchased and operated the Kiwanis concession trailer for several years. His last 15 years of employment were with Bank of America as a loan officer providing low interest loans for senior citizens in four southern states.

Although Joe loved to devote his time to helping the community, in his spare time he enjoyed playing sports. He played golf for 50 years with a passion and later picked up pickleball. He played pickleball until the age of 80.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Christine Hendrix; children, Heidi Hendrix of Fayetteville, Ar., Jody Hendrix (Jessica) of Fayetteville, Ar., Jennifer Schalk Dickinson (Jerod) of Russellville, Ar., Jesse Schalk (Lori) of Orlando, Fl., Ron Schalk (Denise) of Russellville, Ar., Ray Schalk (Nik) of Benton, La., LeRoy Schalk (Jennifer) of Springdale, Ar.
