Joe Marion Obituary

Joe Marion

Apr 11, 1941 - Aug 17, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joe Blaine Marion, age 83, on August 17, 2024. He was at his home surrounded by his family. He leaves behind the love of his life for 61 years, Esther Goff Marion; two beautiful daughters, Michelle (Tommy) Phelps and April (Mark) Smith; his grandchildren, Rachel Phelps, Lauren Phelps, and Garrett (Tiffany) Bowman; one step granddaughter, Logan (Thomas) Thayer; two great grandchildren, Grant and Grady Bowman; step great grandchildren, Wyatt and Sawyer Thayer; and a special brother-in-law, Rex Goff. Joe was born April 11, 1941 to James Raymond Marion and Martha Mozelle Sprinkle Marion in Forsyth County. He grew up on a farm in Surry County. Joe moved to Forsyth County while in high school and graduated in 1959 from Northwest High School. Senior year of school he was chosen "Most Outstanding Young Farmer of Forsyth County" by the local chapter of Future Farmers of America while he was tending rented land in Forsyth County. Farming was in his blood. After graduation, Joe was hired by RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. He was the youngest finished carpenter hired at that time. While working there, he was also farming his 100-acre farm in Davie County. During this point of his life, he began landscaping. In the spring of 1964, while still employed by RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co, Joe established his own company which is what he has been known by for 60 years, Joe's Landscaping & Nursery Co. He was working second shift at Reynolds and doing landscaping during the day. He eventually left Reynolds and pursued his dream of owning his own business full time. His empire was built on long days, hard work and determination. It grew from seven acres to over 65 acres in the past 60 years. If you ever ask Joes what his name was, he would always reply "Landscaping Joe". Joe never met a stranger and talked to everyone who crossed his path. He loved what he had created and was proud to tell all that he built his business from the ground up, with the help of his wife and daughters. Joe has numerous hobbies including a passion for antique tractors. He bought and restored over 40 in his lifetime. His main love was a John Deere 830, he participated in tractor pulling's all over the state. He pulled from the 1990s to well into the 2000s, winning lots of trophies but mostly "bragging rights". He also loved restoring antique cars and trucks, everything from A-models to '63 Galaxies. He was often seen around town and at cruise-ins with his favorite vehicle of the day. Traveling was also something he enjoyed with his wife and family. By the time Joe and Esther were married 50 years they had traveled all 50 states together. The family would like to thank April Lane, Angie Hall, and Heather Howel for all their love and kindness. We would also like to thank Novant Cancer Center, especially Dr. Timothy Collins, for his guidance and caring spirit during the past few years.

A private family service will take place at a later date.

Psalm 73:26 "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

I met Joe as a child and saw him at my kin peoples houses and events. He was always happy to talk to you no matter what was going on. I really enjoyed when he visited Forsyth Tech to talk to my horticulture class around '92, and singled me out to help him, calling me by name. The other students were taken aback that "I" knew this famous man... lol. And He was famous, for tractors, talking, landscaping, plant knowledge, cars, carpentry and a lot of other topics. Joe was one in a million, and like others in the area will be missed greatly by so many. Now He and Frank (Holder) can talk about tractors in Heaven, and with Doris about plants.

Joe Marion loved Jesus first and foremost. Loved his family. Loved Landscaping and nursery work.
Joe almost single handed changed the culture for high quality landscaping and plants in Forsyth and surrounding counties. When I first moved to Forsyth County to help build a golf course, Joe was rocking and rolling. He kept the standards for high quantity landscaping and quality plants at 100%.
When I decided to leave the golf course business and pursue landscaping and seeding, Joe was my model. Do it right the first time.
He taught me a lot. Jesus welcomes his Spirit. We will miss his friendship and talent. My condolences to all his family. Love you all.

Michelle and April - I am so sorry to hear the passing of your dad. He was such a good husband, father, family man, and friend.
I had so much respect for Joe. He worked extremely hard to build his business and I always enjoyed talking to him about his successes during my visits. He had a way of making you feel better after spending a few minutes with him. He was truly an inspiration and a legend in the landscaping industry.
What a life well lived.
God Bless the entire family, friends, and community.

Joe never met a stranger, and he and my Dad, L.G. Cartner (who worked at Pleasants Hardware), became fast friends as Joe launched his landscaping business. The story goes that Joe took my Dad´s brand new tiller as trade-in on landscaping when my parents built their last home in 1964. There were many nights when Joe would drop by our home, after a hard (and dirty) day and sit down for a little dinner and great conversation. I was just a little girl, but man what a lasting impression Joe made! I´m proud to say that all of the shrubbery has stood the test of time! As the years passed, Joe and Esther and their girls were always nice to our family. And through the years, my husband and I would go on to purchase many of the trees and plants for our former and current home. Joe may be gone, but he leaves a legacy of what a good person is. My condolences to Esther, April, and Michelle and their loved ones.

We moved to Lewisville 29 years ago and met Joe shortly thereafter through my involvement with the Civic Club. It was always a joy to talk with and spend time around him. He supported "everything Lewisville" and took part in the activities. On the occasion of going by Joe's Landscaping & Nursery and seeing him, he would always grab me and "let me show you something!!!"...and it would be one of his restored vehicles or his "country store". He always had a smile, warm welcome and just demonstrated the joy of life. If you saw Esther and Joe at a restaurant (or anywhere), he would take time to share a greeting or some humorous conversation. Our community and way beyond has lost a friend and the world is just a little bit darker in his absence. His faith was also demonstrated in his life and one day....a great reunion!

We will always remember Joe as a hardworking, joyful, caring, God fearing man. Whether delivering shrubs, trees, pine straw bales, straw bales, fertilizer, and grass seed to our multi family projects by the tractor trailer load or smaller amounts to our single family home sites he always knew what and how much we needed. Visiting with him at his business was also always a special time as he showed us his old restored tractors and Joe´s General Store. We will miss you dear friend, rest in peace in the Lord.
To you, his family, we send our deepest condolences.
