Joe Melo, age 93, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026. He was born in 1932 in Terceira, Azores, Portugal. He later immigrated with his wife Irene and infant daughter Maria in 1959 to California, where he spent the remainder of his life.
Joe was a hardworking truck driver for many years, a profession that reflected his strong work ethic and lifelong dedication to providing for his family. Through long days and countless miles on the road, he built a life grounded in responsibility, perseverance, and quiet pride.
Joe was a selfless, kind, and deeply compassionate man whose greatest joy was his family. His generosity extended far beyond his home, as he was always there for his neighbors and his community-offering help whenever it was needed and sharing in the abundance of love he had for everyone. He lived with quiet humility and a sincere desire to make life better for those around him.
He also had a special love for animals and was known for often adopting strays, welcoming them into his home, and making them part of the family. This compassion reflected the way Joe lived his life-with gentleness, patience, and an open heart.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Irene Melo; his children, Maria Jesualda Leal (husband, Carlos Leal) and Joe Melo Jr. (wife, Nickell Melo); his grandchildren, Paul Leal (wife, Sahar Leal), Brian Leal, Brittany Melo, and Nicholas Melo; and his cherished great-granddaughter, Sophia Leal. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and his legacy of love and kindness lives on through them.
Joe will be remembered for his generosity, his compassion, his love for animals, and the deep devotion he had for his family and community. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider a donation in Joe's memory to one of his favorite charities-
St. Jude’s Hospital,
Shriners Hospital or an animal-related charity. Thank you.
