Joe Edward Zebell, 89, of North Vernon, passed away at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born December 25, 1935, in North Vernon, he was the son of the late Charles A. "Todd" and Maude Pearl (Johnson) Zebell.
Joe was a 1953 graduate of North Vernon High School. After graduation he worked for Cummins Engine Company and a couple of grocery stores before joining the United States Postal Service in 1955. Joe started out as a railroad mail carrier, then becoming a mail carrier. He took a break from the Post Office to serve in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. In September of 1976, Joe became the Postmaster for the North Vernon Post Office, retiring in 1990 after 35 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in North Vernon, where he served as usher. Joe enjoyed golfing, flowers, reading, and going on missionary tours.
Survivors include his nephews, Dennis (Judy) Zebell of Freetown and David Zebell of Indianapolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Charles Zebell.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon. Family and friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday. Burial will follow at the Vernon Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made through the funeral home to the 1st Baptist Church of North Vernon.
