PEACHLAND – On Thursday, November 30, 2023, Mr. Joel Lynn Austin, 89, passed away peacefully with his loved ones gathered around his bedside at Atrium Health – CMC Main in Charlotte.
Funeral services will be 11:00AM, Monday, December 4, 2023, in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro with Rev. Tony High officiating. Interment will follow in the German Family Cemetery in Peachland.
The family will greet friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Sunday, December 3, 2023, at the funeral home and other times at the home in Peachland.
Joel Lynn was born March 11, 1934, in Union County, NC and was a son of the late Rommie Lee Austin and the late Ruth Levinia Thomas Austin. He was a graduate of Peachland High School and was awarded a basketball scholarship to Wingate College, but he was drafted into the United States Army to serve during the Korean Conflict. While serving in the military, he served at Ft. Bragg, NC, and at The Pentagon in Washington, DC.
He had a long and successful career with W.R. Bonsal in Lilesville where he started out as a truck driver, to plant superintendent and retiring as fleet safety advisor.
Joel Lynn was a longtime member of Peachland Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, and he was often called on to sing solos and he was a Sunday school teacher.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, taking family photos, sharing a good joke, reading joke books and anything to bring joy and laughter into the lives of his family and friends.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 70 years, Shirley Mae High Austin; his children, Richard Lynn Austin and wife, Katherine of High Point, Michael Rodney Austin and wife, Frances of Polkton, David Charles Austin and wife, Robin of Kannapolis, Kim Austin Carpenter and husband, Mike and Lisa Austin Caudle and husband, Anthony all of Peachland; his grandchildren Allison Archbine and husband, Jamal, Craig Austin, and wife, Stephanie, Connie Beam and husband, Kyle, Chad Austin and wife, Krystal, Felicia Peacock, and husband, Jordan, Russell Austin and wife, Sarah, Dustin Allen and wife, Candy, Cody Allen, and wife, Rose, Matt Carpenter and wife, Alice, Caleb Carpenter and companion, Mika Rushing and Clarissa Hilliard and husband, Josh, and Christian Caulder and wife, Shelby; his great-grandchildren, Rukia, Laith, Malerie, Caroline, Hannah, Adam, Emma, Brice, Amity, Hunter, Aubrey, Ella, Landon, Logan, Joshua, Charles, Elizabeth, Ivy, Brantley, Calum, Fletcher, Haegen, Remington, Riley, Bentley, Briella, Emberly, Weston and Kaiden.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Jack Austin, his great-grandson, Devin Beam, his brother and sister-in-law, Raeford Lee Austin and Judy, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bill and Ila Mae High.
Joel Lynn will be deeply missed by his family and friends alike.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
