Published by Lawrence Funeral Home - Darien on Aug. 17, 2004.
Joel Capron Cox, a Danbury resident for the past 4 years and a former Long Island resident for 40 years, passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2004 at Danbury Hospital, Danbury, CT. He succumbed to prostate cancer which he fought for 14 years. Born April 15, 1928 in Flushing, NY, a descendant of early American colonists and Revolutionary War veterans on both sides of his family, he was the son of the late Joseph Cox and Kathryn Capron Cox. He was 76.

Joel graduated from Bayside High School in 1945, New York State Maritime Academy in 1947 and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in 1950. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the Naval Reserve at the age of 19.

He was employed by Stern Brothers in New York City from 1950 until 1954, when he was stricken with polio. After rehabilitation, he was employed by Sears, Roebuck & Co. from 1955 until 1976, where he rose to Senior Buyer. He became a Vice President of Spartus Clock Corp., later Director of Product Development of Times Square Stores, until he started his own company JCC Distributors.

He was a president of the Long Island Chapter of the Alumni Association of the University of Pennsylvania, a chairman of the Board of Elders of the Community Church of Great Neck and an elder of Old First Church of Huntington.

A resident of Huntington Bay, he and his wife, Jolyn, retired in 1995 and subsequently moved to a summer home in 1999 on Candlewood Lake in Connecticut and a winter home in Gilbert, Arizona.

Jolyn Russell Cox and Joel were married in 1950. He is survived by his brother Douglas Cox, his daughter, Jennifer Cox Torey, three grandsons Russell Cox, Jason Torey and Dylan Torey, and one great granddaughter, Kellie Lyn Cox. He is predeceased by his only son, Bruce Russell Cox.

Friends may call at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien, CT on Saturday, August 21, 2004 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, August 22, 2004 at 10:00 AM.

Joel spent all his youthful summers on Sebago Lake in Maine, which he loved. A private interment will be held in North Sebago Cemetery, North Sebago, Maine at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut, 405 Main Street, Danbury, CT 06810.

Since I'm off to Europe this afternoon I am unable to pay tribute to my long time friend Joel. Jolyn, I hope and pray that you will be comforted, as I have been, by loving memories.
