Joel Boyce Dellinger

Joel Boyce "Spook" Dellinger – 68, went to be with his savior on Monday, August 15, 2011. He was born July 23, 1943 to Clyde and Lucy Broome Dellinger in Gastonia and graduated from Ashley High School. He worked at several machine shops in Gastonia and was a firefighter for the City of Gastonia for three years. Boyce was a captain for the City of Charlotte Fire Department where he retired after 27 years of service. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved all of his firefighters and had many dear friends. He enjoyed all sports – especially fishing at the Outer Banks with all his firefighter buddies. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Doris Goble Dellinger; daughters, Denise Wilson and husband, Jackie of Mint Hill, Lisa Martin of Stony Point, and Melanie Hamilton and husband, Jeff of Lincolnton, Nine grandchildren and One great-grandson; his twin sister, Joyce Harkey and husband, Frank of Gastonia; sister, Brenda Hollifield and husband, Jim of Orlando, FL., and several nieces and nephews. Our family wishes to thank all doctors, hospitals, and nursing facilities that cared for Boyce for the last 1 ½ years. Thank you Dr. Locklear and Dr. Preston Purdum for your wonderful care. He is preceded by his parents, sister, Glenda Purkey. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 17, 2011 from 7pm to 9pm at McLean Funeral Directors in Belmont, N.C. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 2:00pm at Shady Brook Baptist Church with Revs. George Sherman and Tom Hartis.
