Joel Siegel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 29, 2007.
NEW YORK (AP) _ Joel Siegel, a longtime movie critic for WABC-TV and ''Good Morning America'' who racked up five New York Emmy Awards for his insightful work, died Friday, the television station said. He was 63.

The station said Siegel, who was famous for his weekly reviews, had been battling colon cancer.

''Joel was an important part of ABC News and we will miss him,'' ABC News President David Westin said in a release. ''He was a brilliant reviewer and a great reporter. But much more, he was our dear friend and colleague. Our thoughts and prayers are with Joel's family.''

Siegel was known for his sense of humor, movie acumen and sharp judgment. He never let an actor off the hook if the performance was lackluster.

''The appeal of Matthew McConaughey has long evaded me both as a pinup and as an actor,'' Siegel opined in his review of ''We Are Marshall,'' a 2006 film. ''His constant ticks, bad hair and strained syntax as a coach fumble what should have been the tragic and inspirational story of the rebuilding of Marshall University's football team after a devastating plane crash.''

Dave Davis, president and general manager of WABC-TV, said Siegel loved to poke fun at uninspiring movies.

''No one had more fun writing about a bad movie than Joel,'' Davis said.

ABC anchor Charles Gibson said Siegel knew how to tell a story.

''He had an inexhaustible supply of stories, most funny, many poignant, all with a point or a punch line,'' Gibson said.

Born in Los Angeles on July 7, 1943, Siegel graduated cum laude from UCLA. After college, he started writing for The Los Angeles Times, where he reviewed books.

He landed in New York City in 1972 and worked as a reporter for WCBS-TV. He also hosted ''Joel Siegel's New York'' on WCBS Radio. Four years later he jumped to WABC-TV, cementing his reputation as a film critic over the next three decades.

In 1981, he joined ''Good Morning America'' and became a regular as the network's entertainment editor, easily recognizable by his thick mustache and glasses.

In addition to Emmy Awards, he also received a public-service award from the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith; and the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association Award for general excellence in individual reporting.

He survived by his son, Dylan, and wife, Ena Swansea.

For Joel...

For a critic, you were
surely loved by the masses.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I watched the GMA tribute yesterday & was very moved. It's still hard to believe that we won't hear his reviews for the upcoming Summer blockbusters. He'll be sorely missed, but my heart goes out to his family. May the peace of God surround his son, wife, family & close friends as we wait for the day that Joel will be called by the Lord Jesus to resurrection. My sincerest sympathies.

A movie review was not a movie review, in my opinion, unless it was given by Joel Siegel. As my wife and I are avid movie goers, we respected Joel's reviews. But, more importantly, he was a gentleman, a really sweet guy and above all, a "mensch" with a capital M.

There is no entry by anyone who has signed this guestbook for the July 7th date…that would have been Mr. Siegel's 64th birthday...so as they say...better late than never...Happy Birthday...in that far better place…where he has been reborn to an eternal life...I know he will continue to watch over... and guide his loved ones… from the best seat in “God’s” house.

His son will know…through all of the accolades and documented footage...that his father was respected…well thought of…by his colleagues…and his public...and that he was a wonderful…hands-on… and proud father of his son… Dylan…whom he loved very much.

As a viewer…I always appreciated his reviews...he came across as a pleasant…kind… good-natured human being… he didn't need sarcasm…or a mean-spiritedness…to make his point of view known…he was intelligent…down to earth…witty…fair…and decent.

May he rest in peace…and may God bless his family…as they cope during this most difficult time.

With my prayers…and deepest sympathy for his family...he will be missed.

My 51 year old brother died on the same day as Joel Siegel from lung cancer. I can say that cancer is definitely the worse thing that can happen to a family and hopefully your family will eventually come to terms with such a great loss.

Like many others who have been watching Joel Siegel on television for so many years, I truly cannot believe he is gone. I am a 33 year old life long New Jerseyan and literally have been watching Joel on both local WABC as well as Good Morning America for most of my life (26 years or so, I believe). His warmth, love of the movies, and most importantly, his great love for his son, literally came through that tv screen and I truly feel like I have lost a friend. I wish his family comfort during this difficult time. Joel--rest in peace.

Joel, I can't believe that you're gone...you made the routine of daily life bearable. We always knew that when we would sit down to get ready for work we could always count on you to be there on that screen with your witty remarks and silly mustache to help us get through the day. When I heard the news of your passing...it was surreal. I see your picture by this guest book and I can't believe it..no way, you will always be with us. Its like some of the brilliant color of life has dulled, and lost some of its magic.
Watch over us Mr. Silly Mustache and we will see you again one day...but for now, you can entertain the angels and bring some of your magic to them.
God Bless you.

It is always so sad when you hear the passing of someone...to most of us, unexpectally and suddenly; while to others they waited painfully. i know I have a friend going through this. The most comforting, they are NO longer in pain and they are going to a much better place and in spirit they will alway be here.
to the Siegel family, for so many years we have watched him entertain us with his brilliant movie/tv show critic that we can still hear his voice and his laughter. He is resting now. I know we are selfish and rather have him here with us. God understands this too. But at least now, he no longer suffers from a terrible disease and he will ALWAYS be there,in your heart, in your dreams and in your home. He will come to you and he will let you know he is ok...and hard as as that is hard to accept, know he will touch you and will kiss you in your sleep. He is there...as your guardian angel.

Safe hugz!

My sincere condolences go to Joel's family first & then to his extended family at GMA . I loved watching him every Fri. on GMA. He was not just a critic, but he also was a comic. He gave a perspective to every movie he watched; be it good or bad. Joel never pulled any punch's If a movie was good, he said why he thought it was, & vice-versa. Friday morning's on GMA, will never be the same without Joel.
