Joey Black Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Murfreesboro Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Feb. 24, 2023.
Joey Black, age 53, a native of the Silver/Walter Hill community in Rutherford county, passed away unexpectedly, at his residence in Winona, TX on February 9th, 2023.
Joey is preceded in death by his father, Ellis "Jipper" Black. Paternal grandparents, Marcus and Lola Nickens Black. Maternal grandparents, Raymond and Eunice Preston Campbell. His cousins, whom he considered his brothers, Darren Welker, and Wendell Black.
Joey is survived by his wife Skyla Carrillo Black of Coleman, TX; mother, Terrill Campbell Black, of Lascassas, TN; daughters NikkiJo Black and Steely Black of Coleman, TX, son, Kobe Black of Smyrna, TN, sons Jett Black and Remington Black of Coleman, TX; brother Jack (Katy) Black of Lascassas, TN; sister Jill (Scott) Turner of Lascassas, TN; aunts Margaret (John) Welker of the Silver Hill community, Lorene Elrod and Ruby Ferrell, both of Murfreesboro, TN; uncle Howard Black of the Silver Hill community, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
Joey graduated 8th grade from Walter Hill Elementary School and went on to graduate from Oakland High School in 1988. He began a 20-year career working for Rutherford County at the Sheriff'soffice, in maintenance and ending his time as a heavy equipment operator at the Rutherford County Landfill.
Joey's passion and favorite past time was dove hunting. He anticipated and prepared for noon on September 1st, each year with contagious enthusiasm. He included his boys from a very young age and made precious memories with them along side his dad, cousins, uncles, and close friends. He was also passionate about raccoon hunting. He spent many nights in his teen years training his most treasured coon hound, Pac-Man, as fine a coon hound that ever walked, according to most. It was even rumored he turned down an offer to trade Pac-Man for a Cadillac. He loved the outdoors, riding 4-wheelers and spending time with his family and friends "at the creek".
Above all other things in life, Joey's greatest passion was his 5 blessings, his children. He loved each of them with his heart and soul. Any warm day, you could pass his home and see him in the yard throwing baseball, playing kickball, or swinging them way too high in the homemade swing hung from the big oak in the front yard. He rode them around on his 4-wheeler for hours until they were old enough to ride along side him on one of their own. He spent countless hours at the creek letting them splash and play while he laughed and watched on with such pride and joyfulness. He loved watching them play baseball and never complained about the countless hours of practice done at home. Joey loved his babies with kindness and gentleness, rarely raising his voice or hand. His greatest love was his babies and his absence will be felt, always. His greatest legacy is his children and may the memories of good times and love sustain them forever.
Visitation with the family will be held at Murfreesboro Funeral Home on Saturday, March 4th from 12 p.m.-2 p.m. with a Memorial service to immediately follow.
If you wish to honor Joey, the family encourages donations to Darren Welker's Servant Heart Fund. Donations can also be made directly to the family for travel, memorial, and other expenses via Venmo. For information contact Skyla or NikkiJo directly.
