Today, I randomly thought of Joey because of the song he always sung about guacamole when teaching an after school magic class at Woodland Hills Elementary. Then I thought of all of the toys given to the kids during the lessons. So saddening to see that he had passed away.

Gosh. I was so shocked to see this on the internet. I was looking for Joey once again to supply me with some confetti cannons and found this. Joey was a huge help to me back in 2006 when I did two concerts that year for the Troops going off to war in the Riverside Municipal Auditorium. A sort of a short version of a Bob Hope USO show for our Troops. Joey, being a Veteran was so excited about my program and concert, that he asked me if he could run and organize the confetti shoot from the balcony. Of course I was elated to have Joey take that pressure off of me and because it was for the troops, Joey did it at no charge. I totally enjoyed the drive to Chatsworth to see him and Joan and just talk about anything. Joey was a great patriotic man and I am blessed to have known him for a short time on this earth. I don't think there was anything that could get Joey down or drag him down. He was truly a man with a heart. Joan? If you read this, please get in contact with me through my email. Be sure to put your name or Joey's name in the subject line so I don't accidently delete it. I'm truly sorry for you loss and today, I'll be thinking heavily about Joey and the guy who meant a lot to me as he put so much into my show in Riverside. I look back now, and wish I had spent more time with both of you. Ray

almighty Opp

Although our aims were a bit different, joey's enthusiasm and child-like demeanor meant and will always mean the world to me. He never allowed the "have to's" of this world (bills, the IRS, health issues etc.) to strip him of his love and passion for magic and laughter, fun and children.
I can barely type this.
I'm so happy and lucky to have had life grace me with his presence. So grateful for the many hours spent with him and was honored to have him recently join me in Koreatown to enthrall the almighty Opp Community several months ago in ways that only he could. Every time I've considered quitting, he was there in the back of my mind, a shining example of what I'd like to be at his age. Unjaded.
He was my friend. I'll miss him so dearly.

What can I say about you Joey other than When Firefighters had to work on Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and other major holidays you would always show up for one of your famous magic shows and special magic trick treats for all of the children. You were so popular with the LAFD that I was often asked to work on these holidays so that you would come and enjoy a holiday meal and entertain the crew. Rest in Peace and carry on with the Show.

I met Joey once back in the seventies. He was hat training a rabbit at a local park. He shared his passion for magic, even for a few brief moments, with a total stranger. I never forgot the encounter or his name. I saw a piece on spectrum about his passing and wished to share my encounter with his friends and family. God speed to a very special person.

Loosing Joey came as quite a shock to me because he seemed so full of life every time I visited his field of dreams and magical museum. Since hearing, I am sad and think about him quite often. For 26 years he (and Joanie) helped me with testing cannons and taking photos, for that I am thankful a thousand times over.
He was a real trooper and ran a tight ship with organization, property up keep, class commitments, and cannon launching for schools. His generosity of giving away toy goody bags proves his heart was always in the right place. Whenever anyone was in need, Joey stepped right up with his bag of tricks and saved the day. The greatest entertainer ever! He truly loved what he was doing.
His wife Joanie was always by his side and supported him with every new venture. I will greatly miss the Chatsworth visits with him, and am sure he is resting in better place performing eternal magic. His legacy will live on along with his love for collecting toy dragons, fairies and mythical fun items.
We love you Joey!
God bless you

I was saddened to learn the news about Joey Magic. My brother Paul has been your neighbor for decades. All of our family gatherings would include a visit by Joey. The kids loved his shows. So did the adults. You will be missed Joey. Thanks for the fun times!!

Joey, best friend and off-and-on roommate since 10th grade; we shared a lot of trips and journeys over the last 5+ decades. I was looking forward to several more over the next few years. Say aloha to your Mom and Dad for me! Looking forward to seeing you on the other side, Joe!

In so many ways Joey was the little brother I never had. He was off the wall funny, embarrassing (pulling a lace bra out of my blouse at the most inopportune times), handing me a rabbit skin and a spring and asking me to make it come alive. And sometimes his funny comments were so true - Those SOBs are trying to kill me - in a letter from Nam. The beautiful wedding in his and Joannie's home, magic included. I was always welcome in their home, and always went home with a stomach full of good food and pockets full of magic. He shared himself, and was a huge contributor to the community. A very special part of my life is now a wonderful memory, never to be forgotten.
