Canandaigua – John H. Aikey, Jr., age 86, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, while surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jane (Moore) Aikey; three children, Barb (Luis) Vargas, Brenda Jones (Keith Shaffer) and Don (Barb) Aikey; four grandchildren, John Jones, Cody Aikey, Donald Aikey, Jr. and Fynnah Aikey; brother-in-law, Roger White; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Betty Richardson, Ann Perry and Sharon White; three brothers; and son-in-law, Jack Jones.
John was born in Canandaigua and was the son of John H. Sr. and Dorothy (Taylor) Aikey. He was a graduate of Canandaigua Academy, class of 1956. John worked for the City of Canandaigua DPW for 18 years and then went on to work for the New York State Department of Transportation as a drill rig supervisor. He retired from the state after many years there. John bred, raised, trained and raced standard bred horses at his horse farm on County Rd. 10 in Canandaigua. His horses raced throughout New York State. He was a former volunteer fireman for the City of Canandaigua. John could fix anything and he loved to tinker around the house and farm. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no services. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Begin Again Horse Rescue, PO Box 28, Honeoye, NY 14471. Arrangements are by Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., Canandaigua. Condolences may be offered at www.johnsonkennedy.com.
