John Altman Obituary

John W. Altman, 89, of Gilpin Township, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, in Quality Life Services, Sarver. Born Sept. 27, 1935, in Gilpin Township, he was a son of the late James J. Over the years, he worked at Allegheny Sand Mine, the Vandergrift Foundry, American Window & Glass, Helms in Irwin, and Spangs in Homestead before finishing his career at Allegheny Ludlum in West Leechburg & Bagdad, retiring in 2001. John was a life member of Forks Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a skilled carpenter and could build and repair anything. John was well-regarded in his community for his willingness to help family, friends, and neighbors with projects. He liked working in his yard, loved animals, took pride in his cars and trucks, enjoyed crafting with his late wife, and loved to travel together on train and bus trips throughout the U.S. over the years. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Rita J. "Mammy" Altman, who passed away on Sept. 30, 2020; brothers, James "Frank" Altman, David Verl Altman, A.G. "Paul" Altman, and Samuel R. Altman; and his sisters, Hazel Marie Altman and Mary M. Shearer. John is survived by his daughter, Julie (Ron) Batiz of Leechburg; grandchildren, Emily (Matthew) Shoemaker, Molly Melcher, and Becky (Edison) Caldwell; great-grandchildren, Sofia and Mason; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, 2025, in CURRAN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, 300 Market St., Leechburg. Additional visitation will be held from noon until the hour of service at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2025, in Forks Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 253 Forks Church Road, Leechburg, PA 15656, with Reverend Brad Ferko officiating.
