John Andrews Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by G.L. Hills Funeral Home, Ltd. on Mar. 26, 2026.
John J. Andrews, 66, of Des Plaines, IL, passed away after a valiant battle against cancer on March 24, 2026. Born in Saginaw, Michigan, on August 2, 1959, John was the first-born son of Jack J. Andrews and Ann L. (Gomon) Andrews. He graduated from Arthur Hill High School, Class of 1977, and attended Michigan State University where he graduated with his bachelor's degree from the College of Communication Arts and Sciences in 1982. During this time, he met the love of his life, Jeannette (Weishaar) Andrews. They enjoyed many summers on Mackinac Island together, where their love story blossomed. On July 11, 1987, they became Mr. and Mrs. John J. Andrews. John and Jeanette moved to Des Plaines, IL and have been residents there for over 35 years.

John was a well-respected writer and editor for various media and publishing companies throughout his extensive career. John's heart spoke to and for animals. He spent decades advocating for animal rights, along with volunteering at local shelters and doing animal rescue and transports in the greater Chicago area. For many years, John and Jeanette adopted both dogs and cats into their home. His passion started many years ago with the adoption of Lucky the Cat. Each and every animal that came into his life would be considered just that, "Lucky".

John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Jeanette; his in-laws John and Mary Anne Weishaar of Rochester Hills, Mich; his sister Leslie Andrews (Rick McGregor) of Denver, Colo, sister-in-law Laurie Andrews, of Gaylord, Mich; sisters-in-law Anne Marie (Joe) Sapienza and Judy (Bryan) Gulish of Sterling Heights, Mich, nephew Christopher (Alyssa) Shoudy, niece Jenna (Alec) Andrews, his aunt Kay Colbeck and many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Ann and Jack Andrews, his brother Mike, and the many four-legged friends he considered his children.

A celebration of life will occur on July 18, 2026 beginning at 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. at Friendship Park Conservatory, 395 Algonquin Road, Des Plaines, Illinois 60018. Appetizers and refreshments will be served. Donations in John's memory may be made to the local animal shelter/organization of your choice.
