Michael Joseph Walter (1961-2026)

Michael Joseph Walter, 64, of Detroit, MI died after a valiant battle with cancer on March 27, 2026.

He was born in Detroit in 1961 to Fred and Sharon Walter, the youngest of six and unaware he would one day be a middle child. Michael lived in Harper Woods and Manistee before moving to Michigan State University where he found his first love, Sparty. He also studied Engineering, met his wife, and had his first children. He is survived by his wife Melissa; children Scott (Ashley), Lynne (Aaron), Keith (Beth), Karon, Julie (Patrick), Haley, Lexi, and Greyson; and twelve grandchildren.

Michael Walter was NOT a man of few words. Nor did he go on and on without pause. Mike just wanted to talk to everyone, to genuinely find out how they were doing and how he could help. Mike was a man of service.

He raised five of his own children. Then three more. And all along dozens of his nieces and nephews when he got the chance. He was a favorite uncle, a willing brother, and a reliable friend. Mike wanted everyone to succeed and enjoyed watching it happen.

Mourn him as you will. But after, Mike asks you to pick up a hammer, screwdriver, or saw, and help someone. Be there for someone who can't do it themselves or just needs a little guidance. Say yes. Show up. Be there. Make a difference.

Visitation for Michael will be held on Tuesday, March 31st from 2:00-8:00pm, with a Scripture Service at 6:30pm at Chas. Verheyden, Inc., 16300 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan.

A Funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday, April 1st. The family will greet guests at 9:30am, until the start of Mass at 10:00am at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 467 Fairford Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Michael's honor are appreciated to either the family or Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
