Joseph T. Peters

Joseph T. Peters, age 94, passed away peacefully at his home in Royal Oak, Michigan, on March 26, 2026.

Joseph was born on November 11, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan, to immigrant parents Thomas and Mary Peters (nee Rouhib). He grew up in the impoverished Elmwood neighborhood of downtown Detroit and spoke frequently of how "great he had it" as a child. As he grew older, he served in the soup kitchen founded by Fr. Solanus Casey where he believed his life of Good Fortune began after "close encounters".

Later, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, he worked his way through college while raising his young family and later advanced to a career as a mechanical engineer at Ford Motor Company.

A man of deep faith, he loved Jesus, the Catholic Church, and his family. His faith guided his life and relationships, shaping the kindness and generosity he showed to others. He was a dedicated family man and also looked after the welfare of his extended family. He was always there when his family needed him, no matter what the circumstance. Those who knew him will fondly remember his charm, sharp mind, and his favorite expression - describing life's blessings as simply "marvelous," never a day did he complain. Equally, he was deeply loved by his family. He was never a burden on his family, even in his final days, we shall miss him dearly.

Among his hobbies and interests were theology, history, and tending to his garden. He was fortunate enough to enjoy 30+ years of healthy retirement in which he traveled extensively throughout the United States with his close friend Shirley.

Joseph was the beloved husband of the late Edith. He was the loving father of John (Gabriela), Diane, and the late Daniel. He was the dear grandfather of Matthew (Kimberly) and Julie (Bill), and the proud great-grandfather of Morgan, Troy, Liberty, William, and Joseph.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 31, from 4-8PM with Scripture service at 7:30PM at A.J. Desmond & Sons 2600 Crooks Rd. Troy (248)362-2500.

Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, April 1, at 11AM at Guardian Angels Catholic Church 581 E 14 Mile Rd, Clawson. Visitation at the church will begin at 10:30AM.

Final resting place Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit.
