Lata Rani Agrawal

Lata Agrawal, a longtime resident of Rochester Hills, Michigan, passed away on March 27, 2026, at the age of 76.

Born on February 25, 1950, in Gaya, Bihar, India, Lata was the eldest of six children and the daughter of the late Rajendra Das Agrawal and Sarla Kumari Agrawal. From a young age, she carried a strong sense of responsibility and care for those around her, qualities that would define her life.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in India, Lata married Binod Kumar Agrawal, giving birth to her first daughter at the age of 20. In pursuit of a better future, she immigrated to the United States with her young daughter, joining Binod who had moved ahead to establish their new home. Together, they built a life of resilience, family, and community in the greater Detroit area, while at the same time maintaining a strong connection with their family in India. She gave birth to her second daughter in 1974.

In her early years, Lata found joy in the simple and meaningful things: writing letters to relatives, receiving letters from India, listening to Hindi music, reading Hindi novels, planning trips to India, sewing, cooking, and going on neighborhood walks with Binod. She especially cherished raising her daughters and creating a warm and welcoming home. She also loved spending time with family friends, always preparing meals with great love and care. As she grew older, she developed a keen interest in the stock market, becoming an enthusiastic amateur trader who followed CNBC closely and often took pride in outperforming the market (though she didn't love to talk about when she underperformed).

Lata had a deep attachment to her home in Rochester Hills, Michigan, where she built her life and created lasting memories with her family over 46 years. It was a place she loved and was reluctant to move away from. She also maintained a connection to the Bharatiya Temple community, finding spiritual comfort there when she was able to attend.

In her later years, Lata continued to show quiet strength, especially as she cared for her husband during his battle with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Her dedication was a testament to her enduring love and commitment to family.

Lata was predeceased by her husband of over 40 years, Binod Kumar Agrawal. She is survived by her daughters, Swati Agrawal (Anthony Saldana) of Bethesda, MD and Nidhi Agrawal (Noah Weiss) of Chicago, IL, and her cherished grandsons, Nikhil Saldana, Deven Weiss, and Kedan Saldana.

Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren, learning about their lives, celebrating their accomplishments, playing board games with them, listening to them play their instruments, and simply sitting quietly in their presence.

Lata will be remembered for her strength, devotion to family, and the quiet grace with which she lived her life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026 at 10:00 a.m., with viewing and remarks beginning at 10:30 a.m., followed by a puja at 11:00 a.m., at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Directors, 2600 Crooks Road, Troy, Michigan. A cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bharatiya Temple or CurePSP.
