John Applegate Obituary
March 11, 1944 - February 6, 2025
Applegate, John M., 80, of Galloway, NJ, passed away February 6, 2025. Born in Northfield, NJ, he grew up in Atlantic City on Massachusetts Ave. He attended Atlantic City High School where he was a varsity swimmer and set several records. He later lived in Virginia Beach and Atlantic City before moving to Galloway many years ago. He was a commercial fisherman for his career and was the manager of Gifford Marine where he managed a large clamming operation for Bill Gifford. Later he worked as the maintenance supervisor for Nor'easter Condominium Association before retiring. He was a veteran, serving in the Navy during the Vietnam War. In his free time, he enjoyed restoring his wooden Chris Craft, traveling, fishing, and hunting. John was predeceased by his parents, Ethel and Andrew Applegate, Jr.; his wife, Cheryl Smolak Applegate; and his brother, Andrew Applegate, III. He is survived by his sister, Amelia Applegate Barnicle; his brother, Howard Applegate and family; his nephew, Andrew Applegate, IV and family, and his nephew Theodore Barnicle and family.
Burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery, Pleasantville, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars (vfw.org). Online condolences, may be placed at www.parselsfh.com.

John Applegate was my dear friend for seventy-six years. We played together we worked together and fished together and in all that time I realized we never had a serious disagreement. We watched the Eagles win the playoffs, but he never saw them win the Super Bowl. John was a great husband and good friend to many. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

I'm so sorry to hear about John. I was on the ACHS swim team with him. He was a couple of years ahead of me and I always looked up to him. He was a good guy to me.

John Applegate was my idol as a swimmer in ACHS. He was the breaststroke champ. I was in the Boy Scouts with John and Dave Vanderhoff in the Inlet Social Club, Troop 9

I always admired John because he did the things he loved to do . He loved fishing and he made his living by netting for fish along the beach. He caught shad,weakfish,blues and strippers with a small boat with an outboard. His whole family was involved. in fishing out of Atlantic city. He be missed by many who new him. Rest in peace my friend.

Met John in OCNJ as he was a customer of ours after we opened our seafood market Enjoyed talking with him about fishing & all things fishy Always great to see him & he will be missed I´m sure ( John loved his scallops! ) RIP John
