John William Barnes

WOODLAND, NC – John "Johnny" William Barnes, 82, of Woodland, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on February 19, 2026. He was born on February 7, 1944, in Northampton County, NC, to Pollock T. (Pal) Barnes and Annie Rae Joyner Barnes. Johnny was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jackie Liverman Barnes, and his brothers, Patrick Barnes and Luther Barnes.

Johnny was the co-owner and operator of Barnes Barbershop in Murfreesboro, NC, with his father and his brother Luther. He earned the love and respect of his many loyal customers who were or became lifelong friends. He was a lifetime member of Potecasi Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, trustee, and Sunday School teacher. Johnny's genuine authenticity, southern gentleman charm, vibrant personality, quick wit, and impeccable sense of style made him a standout in any room he entered.

From his teenage days and throughout his life, Johnny loved being at the beach with family and friends. Johnny was also a scratch golfer. He studied and perfected his game and managed the Valley Pine Country Club. It was a joy for him to share the game with others.

Johnny was an amazing dancer, and whether it was at the beach clubs of the Outer Banks or the Woodland Armory dances, he was first on the dance floor and the last to leave. He and his lovely, equally stylish wife, Jackie, were a dynamic duo, always the life of the party and setting the standard for elegance and fun. Music was a huge part of Johnny's life, and he loved attending concerts and dancing to the rhythm of his favorite tunes.

Johnny's family, friends, and community will forever remember him as a man of immense character, kindness, and style. He treated everyone he met with dignity and respect, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his son, John Ashley Barnes of Potecasi, NC, and his sister, Peggy Britt, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. A special thanks goes to the loving, devoted caregivers whom he charmed every day and who treated him and Ashley as family.
