John Davis Baumstark Jr.

BISMARCK - John Davis Baumstark Jr, 78, of Bismarck, died at Benedictine (St. Gabriel's) in Bismarck, N.D. on February 3, 2025.

John was born in Lexington, Ky., on August 23, 1946, and resided there until he enlisted in the Air Force. He served at Lincoln Air Force Base until his honorable discharge. Following his service, John worked in the lab at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington, Ky. for over 25 years. In 1990, he and his wife, Beth Pederson Baumstark, moved to Bismarck with their two small children.

In Bismarck, John operated the microscope sales and service business, Biotec. He also enjoyed working at Bob's Photo for many years. John's interest in science, the beauty of nature, and photography led to his unique and beautiful crystal photography.

John was a quiet and loving man, as well as a loyal friend. He enjoyed camping, bicycling, reading, and spending time with his family. He was very proud of each of his children.

John is survived by Beth Baumstark, his loving wife of 39 years; and his children: Erika (David) Johnson, Martinsville, Ind., Katherine (Josh) Melgaard, East Grand Forks, Minn., John D. (Catie) Baumstark III, Lexington, Ky.; his stepdaughter, Rebecca (Paul) Lile, LaGrange, Ky.; as well as four grandchildren: Isabella Johnson, Brady Johnson, Mark Andrew Lile, and Timothy Lile. He is also survived by his two half-sisters, Renetta Purvis, Ky. and Georgia Fallaw, Ga.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John D. Baumstark and Justine Shearer; as well as his two brothers, William and Frederick Baumstark of Ky.

John's body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
