John Oliver Benson, 81, of Salvo, passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at his home in Salvo, NC.

John was born on February 26, 1944, in Davenport, Iowa, the only son of the late Jane Petty Benson and Arch M. Benson. He pursued an education BSBA from East Carolina University, and MSA form Central Michigan University. John was proud and grateful to serve our Country from 1962-1969 in The United States Marine Corps. After service to our country, John served in law enforcement roles in Craven County and Tarboro and went on to work at Carolina Telephone in Commercial, Security, and Employee/Labor Relations; he retired from telephony in 2000 and went on to work for the National Park Service at the Cape Hatteras Nation Seashore, he retired from there in 2020.

John enjoyed being a husband, a father, a fisherman, and a "ham" Amateur Radio Operator. He volunteered for numerous community positions including CERT and was also a Beach Food Pantry Board Member. Foremost and through all of his life, John exercised his greatest passion of serving others. He was fulfilled through God's use of him and his talents here in the United States, and abroad in Central America and South America, through the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. John served for over forty years to improve the lives of others through being "the hands and feet of Christ whenever needed."

John is survived by his wife, Lisa Katherine Hux. He is also survived by his daughter, granddaughter, and son-in-law, Ellyn Jane B., Camila, and Brian A. Dubberly of Ahuachapán, El Salvador, along with many beloved nieces and nephews, in-laws, special friends, and acquaintances. John also leaves behind a fine group of "grumpy ole cohorts/buddies" that he loved very much. John was preceded in death by his parents, Jane P., and Arch M. Benson, and his sister Dorothy Jane (Chi Chi) B. Sites, along with her husband John Sites, Sr.

A service to honor and celebrate John will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 11:00 am at Fair Haven United Methodist Church, 24240 Seabreeze Drive, Rodanthe, NC 27968.
