John Bertoia

Born Giovanni Bertoia on September 5, 1920 in Bannia, Italy, Mr. Bertoia died peacefully February 19, 2023. He was 102 years old.
Mr. Bertoia changed his name to John when he immigrated to the USA in 1947, ultimately settling in Detroit, Michigan.
A devoted husband of 78 years to Palmira Bertoia (née Battistuzzi), John became father to 3 children, grandfather to 6 grandchildren, and Bisnonno (great-grandfather) to 6 great-grandchildren.
He enjoyed spending winters in Florida with longtime friends and was an enthusiastic card player – especially Euchre and later SkipBo. He was an honest, hardworking and driven man who started as a brick mason; he lovingly custom built all of the personal residences for his family, as well as many rental properties in the Troy area. His strong work ethic was instilled in his family and his honesty was respected by many. He was also a longtime member of the Venetian Club of Mutual Aid.
John was a self-made man who was known to say: "When you rest, you rust"; "9-5 is what makes a living, it's what you do from 5-9 that defines your lifestyle"; "If I can do it, you can do better."
He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 78 years, Palmira, his children, Vera (the late John) Agnetti, John Bertoia, Jack (Sally) Bertoia, grandchildren, Michael Agnetti, Michele (Don) Perella, Mark (Anne) Agnetti, Kelly (Matt) DelCampo, Chris Bertoia, Brianna Bertoia, and great-grandchildren, Caleb, Abigail, Ellis, Owen, Olivia, Brooklyn. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Zucchet, and many nieces and nephews in the US and Canada. He was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Maiani.
Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road, Thursday, February 23, 4-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anastasia Catholic Church, 4571 John R, Troy, Friday, February 24, 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30am. Entombment will take place Saturday 12 Noon at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
