John William Beveridge
October 2, 1935 – January 29, 2024
He was born in
Appleton, Minnesota to William John Beveridge and Dorothy Helen Winegarden, the oldest of eleven children.
They moved to the Portland area in 1943 when he was eight years old where he initially lived in Vanport until the flood. Little did he know that his next-door neighbor in Vanport would someday become his wife in 1955. He started his first job while living in Vanport delivering newspapers for the Journal. After the flood he moved to St. Johns and became a manager at the newspapers station, working a total of ten years for them.
He attended Sitton Elementary and Benson High School where he lettered in track and majored in Sheet Metal. He went on to get his apprnticeship as a Sheet Metal Craftsman. In 1953 he joined the United States Air Force and was responsible for Aircraft Maintenance until honorably discharged in 1965.
He was a man of great faith. In his younger years attended Central Bible Church and loved working at their Trout Creek Bible Camp in the summer. Later he attended Willamette Boulevard Evangelical in north Portland and after moving to the southwest area became a member of Portland Christian Church.
He helped build the Astoria bridge, Fremont bridge and the John Day Dam. He worked at the Portland Shipyards, Snyder Roofing and then the Portland Public School District in the Sheet Metal department until his retirement. Following retirement, he became an active member with the Portland Quarter Midget Racing Association. It began with one race car and his granddaughter Lindsey. He purchased more cars and had a total of seven grandchildren that he taught to race quarter midgets over the years. One of his greatest joys was being at the track with his grandchildren and having them all stay over on the weekends of a race.
Spending time with his family and friends was important to him and evident in the way he kept in contact with them. He loved the outdoors, road trips, camping, hunting, boxing, fishing, coaching Little League Baseball, musicals and in his younger years swimming and scuba diving. He was a devoted fan of Oregon State University Beavers football and a season ticket holder for Portland Trailblazers with his son and brother Gary.
He organized monthly luncheons with his co-workers after retiring. Over the years he went on annual fishing trips on opening day of trout fishing with his dad and brothers, he had season tickets for the University of Portland Men's Basketball team with his brothers and friends, annual summer camping trips to Cougar Washington, Pacific City with family for the fourth of July and a dedicated participant in the annual Rose Festival Medallion Treasure Hunt with his son, daughter Debbie and grandkids.
He was a good man who was kind, had a big heart and would help anyone. He was known for his sense of humor and sharp wit. He will be deeply missed and is survived by his daughters Debbie (Dave) Whitman, Kathleen Beveridge Valdes. Grandchildren Autumn (Don) Nichols, Daryl Merrick, Chris Whitman, Jacquelyn Christian, Lindsey (Travis) Reed, Andre Perez, Eric (Carrie) Perez and Tiffany Valdes. Great-Grandchildren Marisa Nichols, Maija Nichols, Ty Nichols, Marcus Jonathan Merrick, Isaiah Merrick, Beverly Merrick, Hugo Christian, Jack Christian, Violet Christian, Lillianna Gibbs, Zoe McKenzie, Jasmine Brizendine, Abagail Perez, and Noah Perez.
Preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Shirley Ann, his son Richard, his parents, and siblings Kraig, Gary, Michael, Kay Hower and Sherry Andrews.
