John Beverly Obituary
November 14, 1950 - August 2, 2025
John A. Beverly, Jr., 74, of Chesterfield, VA, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 2, 2025. Born November 14, 1950, in Fredericksburg, he was the son of Francis Johnson Beverly and John A. Beverly, Sr., and was preceded in death by his son, Brody Nathaniel Beverly, and his brother, James "NuNu" Beverly.
Known as "Butch" in his youth, John was a gifted athlete and scholar, earning a B.A. in History and Economics from Hampden-Sydney College in 1973. He was inducted into the Hampden-Sydney Hall of Fame in 2011 for football and baseball, having started all 42 football games in his college career and leading his teams to multiple championships. His 197071 football team was also inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2023, an honor he was able to witness virtually after suffering a debilitating stroke earlier that year.
John served as a reference librarian for Chesterfield County for over three decades and later supported local schools and sports teams. He married Katherine Alcorn Beverly in 1991 and treasured raising their two children, Brody and Britney. He especially enjoyed teaching and playing tennis, becoming known for his strong backhand and love of the game.
John A. Beverly, Jr. is survived by his wife, Katherine Alcorn Beverly and his daughter, Britney Noel Beverly of Chesterfield; his nephew, James Michael Beverly, Jr. and his niece, Anne Beverly Showalter and her husband, Hart Showalter, with their children, Jane, Sam, and Charles Showalter of Virginia Beach; his brother, Richard R. Beverly and his niece, Anne Beverly and nephews, Drew Beverly and Ryan Beverly, with other extended family members, cousins and many dear friends.
May perpetual light shine on John's soul and may he rest in peace in eternal life in the love and mercy of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen"
The family will receive friends from 6:00 8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 11, 2025 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. A memorial mass will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, August 18, 2025 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 151 W Washington St, Petersburg, VA 23803. Inurnment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
