Don't remember how our paths crossed at Duke but I'm glad they did. Our common ground was our faith. Me a future pastor in the Lutheran Church and John a born again Baptist we talked a lot about what we believed ...he even came to worship at my Lutheran church near East campus. When we would see each other between classes we would yell across the quad Hey John how's it goin???? What a smile he had for anyone who needed one...glad our paths crossed..I know they will again...can't wait...Peace Rongrunke

Dear Lauren and family,
John was such a strong soldier, in the Fight for the Unborn. His efforts will not, and have not gone unnoticed. May his soul rest in the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ.

To the loved ones of John. Our close friendship was began in 1979 when my I joined 3rd Baptist Church. I remember three categories of our lives together. Training Union - John taught and labored with our adult group regarding the sovereignty of God which began to open my eyes to His glory. We labored in that for 4 years. My growth in grace was catapulted during that time and I cannot overestimate the impact which that had upon me and may family. Personal friendship - John would often drop by my house after work, unannounced, and we'd eat, pray and talk about life and relationship to the kingdom. Those were precious times. His personal integrity - John believed things strongly and walked the walk. I know there were parts of his life where he struggled as we all do but with John I never saw those. John, after you take 10,000 looks at Jesus and worship Him, doing what you were born to do, enjoy the fellowship of the saints who will love your perfectly. May your views of Christ and His kingdom continually grow through all eternity as you enjoy being one of the redeemed.

Lauren, Emily, and Tim,
Brandon and I are very sorry for your loss. John was a giant of faith at Walnut Memorial. I know that he helped so many people with their walk. I remember having conversations in the youth and Emily quoting her daddy. He lived out his faith. I know that he is whole and praising the Father in heaven. I pray God's peace and comforting embrace envelopes all of you during the days, weeks, months, and years to come. We are praying for you. Love, Brandon and Rachel Rice

To Dr Bickel, Tim, Emily, and Sandra; When I saw John at Joy Malone's funeral and met you Lauren, I was so happy to see him. It had been 35 years but John, in spite of his limitations, was still John, the sparkle in his eyes and that voice that I had missed over the years. But I was heartbroken at the same time because of what the illness had taken from him. I still remember he and Frances teaching our Singles class and the Scripture songs he taught us. The weekly bible studies at his house, his dog Shadrach, the game nights we had, and the list goes on and on. John Bucjel taught me how to study the word, how to make it practical, and how to teach it to others. He made such an impact on my life. I am thankful to God for giving this wonderful servant of God as a friend, mentor, and model of the Mist High God. Thank you Bickel family for sharing John with us. He truly loved all of you very much. Weeping at last for the night, but joy comes in the morning. John has that joy of complete healing and being with his family and friends who have gone before. We will know this joy ourselves soo.

Lauren, Emily & Tim,
I got to visit with John a few months before the pandemic hit. I was worried that he wouldn't recognize me but when I walked in & saw the grin on his face I knew he recognized me. John was our Corporate Attorney for many many years & later my personal Attorney. When John & I had met to conduct business, he would always tell me to stick around he enjoyed talking & laughing with me,(Jerry you are one of my favorites). Rest In Peace my friend I'm sure you will be a favorite in Heaven.

Dear Family,
John was the fist attorney I worked with in forming our business partnerships for so many years. He openly shared his faith and we became friends and he even took me to an event to help me see how God uses people where ever He places them. He beat me pretty bad in golf as well, I am so thankful God placed him in my life in 1986. He was a remarkable servant of our Lord and I will pray with you in your loss.
