JOHN ALEXANDER BIRCHLER, 88, of Waterloo, Illinois, peacefully entered the arms of Jesus on Monday, December 23, 2024, at de Greef Hospice House in St. Louis, Missouri.
He was born to the late Vincent and Ruth Birchler in Belleville, Illinois, and was raised in Walsh and Chester, Illinois. John earned his degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. For 44 years, he dedicated his life to teaching music and directing bands in Steeleville, Chester, and Gibault Catholic High School, where he was fondly known as "Mr. B."
John's life was a testament of gratitude, love, and joy. His servant's heart and tireless commitment to kindness left an indelible mark on the many students and friends fortunate to know him. John's love of music, combined with his endearing personality and humor made him a favorite among the many generations of students he taught during his career.
John is survived by his beloved wife – Joan Birchler; his daughter – Jennifer (Jim) Smith; his son – John (Kate) Birchler, II; his grandchildren – Blake Smith, Zachary (Kate) Smith, Hannah Birchler, and Ruby Birchler; his great-grandson – Sawyer Smith; his brother – Neil (Pam) Birchler; and sister-in-law – Michelle Brandhorst.
