John was born on March 27, 1925 in Iola, Illinois to loving parents, Lee and Esther (Lewis) Bishop. He enjoyed a wonderful childhood on their self-sufficient farm. During the big depression of the 1930s the whole community helped each other by trading items one person had for another. If people didn't have things to trade, they would help with harvesting. This close knit town took care of one another! The Good Times club, GTC, had their own entertainment with singing and plays. They had soup parties, candy parties, and shared morel mushrooms. John would say, "It was the best time of my life as far as camaraderie because people were of one accord, and everyone helped each other."

John attended school in Iola and graduated from Louisville High School in 1944. He enlisted in the Navy and served his country during World War II from 1944 - 1946. After discharge, he attended the University of Illinois and received his degree in agriculture and taught agriculture at Louisville High School for 10 years. Then he changed careers and became district manager for seed corn companies until he retired.

On February 26, 1949 he married Delores Logan and they celebrated 70 years of marriage. They raised three daughters together: Debra Brentlinger (Van), Susan Patton (Larry), and Jane Bishop. John has five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

John loved God and served Him all his days. While attending Red Brush Christian Church in Louisville Illinois he was baptized at First Christian Church of Flora. When he moved his family to Effingham, he served as an elder at Willow Street Christian Church. His family has always loved the sweet fellowship and teaching of God's word in every community that they made home. He loved his family and so many friends! He enjoyed fishing, baseball and all things farming. He loved telling stories of his life and talking with people. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
