Minor Funeral and Cremation CenterJohn Leonard Branch, born on March 10th, 1943 in Newport News, Virginia, passed away on February 25th, 2026 at UVMMC.
He was a beloved husband, father and community member, whose impact on those around him will not be forgotten. A proud Navy veteran, John exemplified the qualities of service and commitment throughout his life, which was apparent in dedication to his family and community.
John moved to South Hero in 1945 and graduated from Burlington High School in 1962. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served for 2 years. On June 29th, 1968 he married Barbara Jean Tourville, also of South Hero, where they resided for 58 years together.
John was well known in South Hero, as the owner of Branch’s Store, which he owned and operated with his wife, Barbara for 23 years. John and Barb took over the family business from John’s parents, Darwin and Steuart, in 1969, where he served customers with kindness, compassion, integrity and friendship.Upon selling the Store in 1988, John worked for Sondik Plumbing & Supply Company for 10 years as an inside Sales Rep, where he retired in 2009.
A devoted father, John was most proud of his daughters, Sherry and Amy. His profound love for the outdoors and family, naturally drove him to take his girls on many adventures - snowmobiling, snow-skiing, water-skiing, ice skating and fishing. John also enjoyed golfing, which he played often in his retirement with many friends. It was these activities that brought him joy and created lasting memories with family and friends.
John and Barb enjoyed many traveling adventures to such places as U.S. Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Bahamas, Mexico, and their finale trip to Italy to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
John is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, his two daughters, Sherry Roy, (Christian Roy), Amy Branch, (Andy Barrett), as well as his five grandchildren, Kendrick Pelkey, Karson Pelkey, Karly Pelkey, Lauren Watson, Lance Watson and great-grandson; Kasey Reen, as well as many nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his father, Darwin Pearl Branch; his mother, Mary Steuart Newheiser Branch; his brother; Frederick Branch, his sister; Virginia Pratt and his grandson; Alexander Watson. Their memories remain a cherished part of his legacy.
John will be remembered for his generous spirit, infectious laugh, unwavering dedication to his family and his contributions to the community. His family will always cherish the memories and lessons he imparted throughout his life. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held on March 3, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Minor Funeral and Cremation Center located at 237 Route US-7, PO Box 113, Milton, VT 05468. A Mass will be celebrated in his honor on March 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 501 US-2, South Hero, VT 05486.
