John Thomas Toohey Brennan
May 19, 1934 - May 12, 2025
John Thomas Toohey Brennan, 90, passed away on May 12, 2025, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service, dedication, and faith. Born on May 19, 1934, in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, John moved to Fort Pierce, Florida, at the age of 10, where he built a life defined by community, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to justice.
A proud graduate of the University of Florida, John earned degrees in Political Science and Law, laying the foundation for an extraordinary legal career. After passing the Florida Bar Exam in 1961, he began practicing law in Fort Pierce. From his early days in the Arcade Building, John quickly established himself as a skilled attorney, eventually joining the firm of Carlton & McCain. His expertise in eminent domain law, especially during the construction of the Florida Turnpike, earned him a reputation as one of the leading attorneys in South Florida.
Governor Claude R. Kirk, Jr. later recognized John's dedication and skillfulness, appointing him as State Attorney. John balanced public service with his private practice, eventually becoming senior partner at Brennan, Hayskar & McAlily and serving as Fort Pierce City Attorney for more than 30 years. His career reflected an unwavering commitment to justice and public service.
Beyond his legal career, John was deeply involved in his community. He held leadership roles in civic organizations such as the Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Columbus, and the Fort Pierce Elks Lodge. He also served as the President of the Kiwanis Club and assisted in the building of St. Mark Catholic Church, tasked by Father Peter Dolan to initiate the construction of the sanctuary and social hall. Furthermore, John served on the board of directors for First National Bank and played a pivotal role in bringing the Federal Courthouse to Fort Pierce.
John's competitive spirit extended beyond the courtroom. As a devoted Gators fan, he founded the Treasure Coast Gator Club and established an endowment for UF's football program. John also enjoyed spending time with his wife's adored Rottweilers, and their crossbred cattle that were a special part of their lives together.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Marilyn; his parents, Francis A. "Frank" and Mary Toohey Brennan; and his brother, Anthony F. "Tony" Brennan. He is survived by his sister-in-law Nancy Phares, nephews Brad (Sam) Phares, Brian (Christine) Phares, and Brent (Sarah) Phares, and his five great-nieces and two great-nephews.
John Brennan's life was a testament to faith, perseverance, and service. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the community he helped build.
A memorial service will be held to honor John's life with the viewing on May 20th from 4pm-6pm at Yates Funeral Home located at 1101 S US1, Fort Pierce. The service will be the following morning, Wednesday, May 21st at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church located at 1924 Zephyr Avenue, Fort Pierce.

In Memory of John T. Brennan
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. John Brennan-a man whose quiet leadership and unwavering dedication helped shape the future of Fort Pierce. He was more than a legal mind or public servant; he was a mentor.
When I began my journey into public office, first considering a run for Mayor in 2006 and then successfully elected as County Commissioner in 2008, it was John-along with Mayor Dannahower and Mack Misholli-who generously offered their guidance. Their focus on the Port and the long-sought Federal Courthouse inspired my earliest efforts, and with their encouragement, I was proud to help secure federal support to bring the courthouse home.
Mr. Brennan, small in stature but a giant among leaders with significant impact, lives on through the community he helped build and the leaders he influenced. I am honored to have been one of them.
