John Gregory Bylski, formerly of Waterloo/Marshall, an individual of notable character and deep-seated affection for those around him, passed away on July 4, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 82. Born on June 11, 1943, in Evanston, Illinois, John exemplified a life rich in service, love, and dedication.
After completing high school in 1960, John pursued higher education at Northwestern University for two years before answering the call of duty. He served with distinction in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and continued his commitment to service in the Army Reserve until his honorable discharge in 1971. His experiences during this time shaped him profoundly and helped cultivate a strong sense of community and connection.
Upon relocating to Tucson with a group of friends from the Chicago area, John developed an enduring love for the region, finding joy in its landscapes and warmth. He returned to Skokie, Illinois, to care for his ailing mother before ultimately settling in Tucson, where he enjoyed a fulfilling retirement after finishing his career in the computer data processing field at the University of Wisconsin in 2008.
John was well-known for his loving personality and a generous spirit that resonated with family and friends alike. He had an extraordinary ability to socialize, often found lending a helping hand to anyone in need. His hobbies included traveling across the United States to visit loved ones, participating actively in family tree projects, and nurturing his passion for gardening. His outdoor flower gardens were a testament to his beautiful green thumb and his deep appreciation for nature's splendor.
He is survived by his sister, Michelle LaVeau of Dresden, Tennessee; nephews, Jeff McBride (Mary) and Patrick McBride; niece, Jean Reneau; and many grandnephews, grandnieces, cousins, and friends. John also cherished a lasting friendship with Roberta Dueno, who resides in Bainbridge Island, Washington.
John is preceded in death by his father, John Przybylski; mother, Neva Poulson; stepfather, Ray Poulson; sister, Christine McBride; and brother-in-law, Ernest McBride. His legacy of kindness, community involvement, and the love he fostered among family and friends will not be forgotten. The world is a better place for having had John Gregory Bylski in it.
