John "Jack" J. Cannon, 98, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Bernard, passed away on February 24, 2026, at Hawkeye Care Center in Asbury.

Friends and family may visit from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A wake service will be held at 3:45 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2026, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1870 St. Ambrose St., with Rev. Steven Rosonke officiating. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Catholic Church Cemetery in Bernard, Iowa. Military Honors will be accorded by the Cascade Legion Post #528 and the Iowa Army National Guard.

Jack was born on the Cannon Century Farm in Bernard, Iowa, on November 12, 1927, the son of Joseph and Agnes (Grace) Cannon. He attended 12 years of school at St. Patrick's Garryowen and graduated high school in 1945. He was the last remaining member of his class. On March 28, 1951, he was united in marriage to his wife Jeanette Hartmann at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952. He worked as a farmer for many years in the Washington Mills area and at the Dubuque Packing Co. for 27 years, and was a member of UFCE 150A. Jack was also a member of both Dubuque American Legion Post #6 and Cascade American Legion Post #528, Bernard & Zwingle Senior Citizens, Holy Ghost Senior Citizens, St. Anthony Catholic Church, and he was a former member of St. Patrick's Garryowen where he served as a lector and usher. He and Jeanette were members of the West Dubuque Band Parents Booster Club in Cascade.

He is survived by his children: Mike (Cristy) Cannon of Clinton, Mary Jo (Greg) Schoepke of New Berlin, WI, Mark (Mary Jo) Cannon of Dubuque, Pat Cannon of Bernard, Ann (Rich) Lewitzke of Watertown, WI, Sue (Paul) Eaves of Richardson, TX, Dan (Lisa) Cannon of Mount Vernon, Dave (Salena) Cannon of Wylie, TX; 19 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter-in-law Dawn Cannon, sister Janaan (Jay) McDonald, and brother Thomas (Frances) Cannon.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, as well as the nurses and staff at Hawkeye Care Center for all the care given to Jack.
