John D. "Jack" Carey, Jr., age 68, of Elkton, MD, and formerly of New Castle, DE, sadly lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. Jack passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday. August 1, 2024.
Born in Wilmington, DE, on April 20, 1956, he was a son of the late Katherine (Choronzy) and John D. Carey, Sr. Jack proudly served in the United States Navy as a submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator. He later completed a Bachelor of Science degree and Professional Engineering License, as well as an MBA. He made his career as an instrumentation and controls engineer at PSEG Nuclear for over 30 years until his retirement.
Jack enjoyed spending time with his family and dog, Beckett, at Bethany Beach as well as building his Cobra kit car and playing golf. He was a global traveler. He loved traveling to new places with his family and friends and tracking the US states that he had the opportunity to visit. Like his own father, driving cross-country was never a burden and was actually relaxing to Jack.
Jack was an avid sports fan and knew all of the stats on any and all competitive sports, football being his favorite. While growing up Jack played soccer and was a midfielder, something he was particularly proud of. He was a huge supporter of women's athletics, travelling to see the women's World Cup and women's NCAA basketball events. He coached all of his kids and grandkids in their own sporting endeavors and took every opportunity to lead, teach and be a role model for others.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Sandra J. Jannetty; children, Catherine Carey, David Carey (Janel), Jennifer Svehla (Michael), and MacKenzie Carey; brother, Frank Carey (Valerie); grandchildren, Brandon, Sam, David, Riley, Mason, Lucy, and Julia; great-grandsons, Logan and Ethan; and canine companion, Beckett.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or online by clicking here.

These words always bring me comfort during times of loss. Rest in peace, Jack.
I am standing on the seashore. A ship sets sail and spreads her white sails on the morning breeze and starts for the ocean. She is an object of beauty and I stand watching her until at last she fades on the horizon. Someone at my side says, "She is gone." Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as large in the masts, hull, and spars as she was when I saw her, and just as able to bear her load of living freight to its destination. The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not her; and just at that moment when someone on my side says, "She is gone," there are others who are watching her coming and other voices take up a glad shout, "Here she comes!" And that is dying.
