It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family of John Michael Carr of Bordentown, NJ, announce his passing at the age of 71. On Friday, March 11, 2022, he was surrounded by his loving wife and children when God welcomed him into heaven with open arms.
He was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where his ever-patient mother spent more time at the police station with him than at home. At the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. John served two tours in Vietnam. He landed in Da Nang and from there he went to the DMZ and traveled onto Dong Ha. A member of the amphibious unit, he was the tail gunner on an AAV, commonly known as "amtraks".
John was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two stars in lieu of the second award, Combat Action Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and his personal favorite, the RVN Cross of Gallantry with palm and frame. Hemwas extremely proud to be a marine. Whether it was singing Marine Corp hymns or speaking at
his grandchildren's schools every Veterans Day, John never failed to show his military pride.
In the early eighties, he started his career as a corrections officer and worked his way up to sergeant at Rahway State Prison. John was known as "The Preacher" to inmates and fellow officers alike. One of the highlights of his career was capturing an escaped fugitive which he received accommodation for. But of all his accomplishments, he was extremely proud of his tie
clip being worn by Donald Sutherland in the movie Lock Up that was filmed at Rahway Prison.
After being thrown out and flagged from every bar in New Jersey, he decided to get straight and began his sobriety journey in 1979. Here he met his wife, Linda, of 34 years, and some of his lifelong best friends. Over the years, he sponsored thousands of struggling men with a funny story, a cup of coffee, and a shoulder to lean on.
Johnny spent his leisure years always keeping busy. He enjoyed fishing, sitting at the diner with friends, playing with his cats, and visiting the casino with Linny. John was always involved with his grandkid's activities and sporting events. His accomplishments include his MVP football award, his DMV award for no accidents for 20 years, his second grade "Best Speller" award,
and he was an expert comb holder maker (minus the initials). He leaves behind a garage full of treasures that his family has no idea what to do with.
There isn't a person on the planet who met John and wasn't left with a lasting impression. He will be greatly missed and as Ernest Hemmingway penned, "Every man has two deaths, when he is buried in the ground and the last time someone says his name." Between his friends and his family, the memory of John Carr will continue to live on forever.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Stella and George Carr; brother and sister, Bobby and Tina Carr; nephew Richard Carr; and son John Michael Carr, Jr.
His memory lives on through his loving wife Linda Carr; children Jennifer Procaccino (Greg), Christy Hemmes (Matthew), and Joshua Carr; step-children Shaune Denson(April) and Brian Denson(Carrie); grandchildren Mia, Kina, Jack, Grady, Matthew, and Stella; nieces and nephew Vicky, Michele, Christina, and Michael; and lifelong best friends. Lest we forget to mention Miss
Sadie Bullard, who will also be greatly missed.
A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 22, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Huber-Moore Funeral Home 517 Farnsworth Ave, Bordentown, NJ 08505.
Military Honors and inurnment will follow at the WM. C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery 350 Province Line Rd., N. Hanover Township, NJ.
Memorial donations in John's name can be made to the American Heart Association.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Huber-Moore Funeral Home Bordentown, NJ. Condolences may be left for Michael's family at www.huberfuneralhome.com.
