John Joseph "Jay" Carvalho passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, in his childhood home, surrounded by the family he loved. Those who knew jay knew this: he never met a stranger he couldn't find the good in; he never made anyone feel small, a rare and remarkable gift.
Jay was known by everyone as one of the kindest and most helpful people anyone could ever meet. He had a way of making conversations easy, always helping others feel welcome and never judged. To know Jay was to experience a sense of peace and warmth that is difficult to put into words. His kindness and gentle presence left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Jay was born on May 11, 1954, to Dorothy and John Carvalho in
Willows, California, where he grew up and attended high school. From a young age he loved sports and weight training, a hobby he began in the seventh grade. In high school he was known as an outstanding athlete, playing running back for the Willows Honkers football team and competing as a sprinter on the track team. It was during these years that his passion for body building began to grow, and working out became a lifelong discipline. At times, the shed behind his family home was filled with people who came to work out with Jay and learn from him.
Jay was also a devoted family man, and his family meant everything to him. When his daughter, Jayma Carvalho, was born, she quickly became the light of his life. Jay was a loving and dedicated father and a deeply compassionate son. In his parents' later years, he cared for them with unwavering devotion, never forgetting the sacrifices they had made for him and his sisters. His care for his parents was a testimony to Jay's faith and personality.
Jay was a dedicated Jehovah's Witness, and his faith was his guiding light and source of purpose. He was baptized on February 13, 1983, and throughout his life he loved sharing his faith with others. Jay faithfully took part in the door-to-door ministry work, hoping to share the love and hope his faith gave him. His devotion ran so deep that staff at the oncology department at Enloe Hospital noted that even under anesthesia during testing, Jay would quote scripture.
The scripture closest to his heart, and the one that gave him hope for the future was Revelation 21:4: "He will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."
Jay was the only son of John and Dorothy Carvalho and the brother of three sisters: Marsha Carvalho of Sacramento, Cindy Purinton of Nevada, and his older twin sister by one hour, Debbie Wiest of Sacramento. He is survived by his daughter, Jayma Carvalho Edwards of Willows, her husband Kevin Edwars, and their two sons, Afton and Charlie. Jay is also remembered with love by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
Above all, Jay loved Jehovah, loved people, and cherished his family deeply. The world is better for the life he lived, and those who loved him will carry his kindness forward.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. 557 3rd St.,
Willows, California 95988, on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 1:00 PM.
Arrangements are held under the direction of Sweet-Olsen Family Mortuary.
