John Chankin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 29, 2017.
John Robert Chankin was born in San Antonio on December 23, 1946. His parents were Dr. Edgar and Florence Chankin. He was a graduate of St Mary's University. After graduation, John obtained a position with the Texas Food and Drug Division in San Antonio before moving to Austin then to Houston where he met and married the love of his life Mercia Van and worked for Baird's Bread for 18 years. He spent some time in Tennessee and Louisiana before returning to Texas . `John was an Eagle Scout and loved to hunt. He could find and bring home the biggest buck, the most doves, and the fattest quail. He also loved to fish, especially along the coast and lakes near Houston. He was a master woodworker who made a stunning cradle for his granddaughters. It will be lovingly passed down to later generations. He loved to play golf and to cook BBQ. His ribs and brisket could make you cry, it was so good. John is preceded in death by his parents, his niece Cari, and his son Jody. He is survived by his wife Mercia, his brother and sister-in-law Roland and Betty Chankin, his daughters Meredith Spice and Rebekah Wilson, sons-in-law Tim Spice and Asa Wilson, granddaughters Montana, Sierra and Rayven Wilson, two nephews, a niece, three great nephews, two great nieces and many friends. John was a good man who loved his wife, his children and his brother dearly. In lieu of flowers or a donation, the family would like you to carry on his outdoorsman tradition and take a young person hunting or fishing.
