John Cherone Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Justen Funeral Home & Crematory - McHenry on Apr. 7, 2025.
John Thomas Cherone, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, left this world peacefully on April 2, 2025, at the age of 82 in McHenry, IL. He was born on May 1, 1942, to Anthony (Tony) Cherone and Eileen (Curran) Cherone, in Chicago, IL, and spent his formative years in Chicago, IL, and spent his formative years there, laying the foundation for a life full of love, achievement, and service.
John's early life in Chicago was marked by his exceptional athletic talent. A proud alumnus of St. Ignatius College Prep, he graduated in 1961,where he excelled in track and field, earning multiple letters in cross country and track. He served as co-captain alongside his lifelong friend Tom O'Hara. Together they were part of the team which won the Catholic League Championship to add to a 13 year consecutive streak. His prowess on the track continued at the University of Loyola Chicago where he set a then AAU record in the 880 yard run.
Following his education, John answered the call of duty and served his country in the US Army from June 1964 to June 1966, where he was recognized as a Marksman (Rifle) and Sharpshooter (Pistol). His commitment to his fellow servicemen and women continued long after his military service ended, as he became a member of the American Legion, Sergeant at Arms, Honor Guard/Color Guard and was fortunate enough to go to the 2023 Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. with fellow veterans to honor their service and sacrifices.
Professionally, John began his career at Graftek Press in Crystal Lake, IL, and continued his journey with Brown Printing after a corporate merger. He was well-respected by his colleagues and clients, not only for his work ethic but also for his ability to build genuine relationships. His love for diverse ethnic cuisines led him to forge friendships with chefs who shared their recipes with him, including the treasured recipe for "Grandma Filomena's Ravioli," which he mastered to perfection.
John's zest for life was evident in his varied interests. He was an avid cook, fisherman, sports enthusiast, music lover, sharpshooter, reader, and a proud advocate of his heritage. His love for his family was unparalleled, as he cherished being a husband to his wife Jacquelyn (Koppen) Cherone and a parent to his children, Michelle Rose Cherone and Anthony Joseph Cherone. He was a doting grandfather to Amanda (Memphis) Rudder and Alyssa Rudder, and a great-grandfather to Deztin, Arye, Hennessy, and Dakota. His sister, Patricia, preceded him in death, but her memory lived on in his heart. He is survived by his sister, Sharon (Martin) Mazurski and a brother, Anthony (Lisa) Cherone
John's favorite musical artists, including the Rolling Stones, Miles Davis, Herbie Mann, and Roberta Flack, provided a soundtrack to his life's journey. He relished the opportunity to spend time with his extended family, making memories every Thanksgiving for over 20 years and celebrating holidays with gusto and love. His annual "Ravioli Day" became a cherished tradition, as he gathered with family and friends to prepare holiday feasts.
An adventurer at heart, John looked forward to exploring the great outdoors with his fishing buddies in Canada and had plans to tour the country's natural wonders in an RV. His travels also took him to Italy, where he connected with his roots in Rome, Florence, and the Abruzzi region.
John lived a life defined by love, gentleness, and generosity. He will be profoundly missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him, and his legacy will continue to inspire and guide his loved ones. As we bid farewell to John Thomas Cherone, we celebrate a life well-lived and the countless lives he touched.
