John E. Cleavenger, 93, of Bridgeport, passed away Thursday evening, March 5, 2026, in River Oaks Healthcare Center. He was born in Flemington on October 20, 1932, a son of the late W. Buford and Kittie (Weber) Cleavenger.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sheila Lorene (Wood) Cleavenger, on February 16, 2013. The were married on August 1, 1954.

He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Adams of Poway, CA; one son, Lary Cleavenger and his wife Kenna of Bridgeport; five grandchildren, Joe Adams, Sam Adams, Andrea Adams, Brianna Adams, and Lary Cleavenger, Jr.; and great-grandchildren Addie and Frances. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Cleavenger and his wife Patty of Texas; and his sister, Joanne Athey of Mineral Wells.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, John L. Adams, Jr.; brothers, Charles, Robert & Oliver Cleavenger; and his sisters, Hazel Wilson, Mildred Lawson, Lena Heckman, and Jeannie Marsh.

Following high school, John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1973 as a Flight Engineer (TSGT) after 20 years of service. He then worked at Pratt & Whitney in Jet Engine Assembly, retiring in 1997 after 25 years of service. He was a member of the VFW Post 573 Clarksburg, and the American Legion Post 68, Bridgeport.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport on Thursday, March 12, 2026, from 4 – 7 p.m., where services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2026. Interment will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Philippi, where Military Funeral Honors will be accorded.
